Well I'm glad the discussion about it remained civil
I hadn't noticed an increase in bickering recently, but I usually only read the builds/grm/ot sections. Thanks for the moderating efforts. I guess the forum serves as an outlet for both people going through good, and rough patches.
My position hasn't changed, and I really don't like someone deciding for me what I should/shouldn't be shown, but it is obviously not the only one to value, and it's always possible to reconsider in the future.

But you can still click a button and see a downvoted post, so it's not like it's being removed.
More of a TW.

With the way the world has become so polarized where every topic is black or white it was only a matter of time before it happened here. This place has become a bit of an echo chamber and there are times when the simple act of questioning the group think leads to dog piles. So like we have to live in the real world we just suck it up and keep quiet as much as we can. The time for actual discussion about real topics is over. Now it's groupthink and friend/foe mentality.
sad. Truly sad.

I bet you $20 you can't find me another online forum that has more legitimate discussion of weighty issues between people with differing viewpoints. Not people on opposite ends of a spectrum yelling across a gap at each other. One where people actually make good-faith efforts to try to understand and persuade respectfully.
Post up a link here, then PM me and I will Venmo you.
Being relatively new here the upvote and downvote aren't really explained....you only get one of each? Ever?
My build thread has 3 upvotes, is that a good thing? I welcome another view from a different vantage point of
my build, sometimes you are to close to see clearly.... I only follow the builds and technical stuff as I figure my views on other subjects are just that, my view.
As someone that has been downvoted many time, I must have missed a recent thread. As far as changing it, there's a simple answer, no, get over it. If getting downvoted affects your life somehow, you need to get off the internet for your own good.
I'm not sure I've seen more than 5 that get enough votes to get hidden, unless of course mine do, but I still see them and don't know about it (which would be hilarious). If your posts are getting hidden, you need to reflect on that a bit.

Just wanted to clarify everybody sees the same view. I'm pretty sure making different displays for different users would take years and cost thousands of lives.

Welcome to GRM!

Your thread is berkeleying amazing and watching a guy who used to work on Blackbirds for a living do a vintage turbo setup on a Lotus Europa is (imho) peak GRM.
Don't worry about the upvotes-most people don't use them. And for gods sake don't stop showing us the cool stuff you're doing!
The real potential irony here is not that the OP was downvoted, it would be that this thread has made users aware of the downvote and they start using it aggressively resulting it what the OP feared (his actions causing the exact thing he was trying to avoid).
I do have a slight fear of this, as I am a bit more of a "I'd rather have the Nazi (just extreme example, not implying anyone here is) out in the open, then hiding in the shadows" kind of person. I was semi-aware of the DV myself but never really considered using it, now that more are aware will a tyranny of the majority result?
I generally doubt it, but I will keep an eye out for posts that are downvoted out, and of I think is not entirely inappropriate, I will upvote it.
Question: how many DVs result in a suppression? Can we use it to at least hide a Canoe?

Come on now let's be civil. No reason to call them a ho.
I think it's possibly a balance thing on the voting. A post could have downvotes but if it stays net positive in voting then it would not get hidden- that's how I'm assuming it works anyway.
In reply to bobzilla :
Dissenting voices are welcome, I appreciate hearing opinions different than mine because it often helps me consider things in different ways, it may not change my mind but it helps me understand why people see things differently.
The problem is often the dissenting voices arent satisfied with stating their opinion and letting everyone else have time to discuss, they want to shout and stomp and argue until everyone agrees they are right and that just isn't going to happen. What it does is ruins a really nice discussion.
This a really good forum with lots of nice, intelligent, diverse people from all walks of life. If you find that you are always the dissenting voice, maybe you need to consider that you might just be wrong about some things. I know I have been.
None of this is pointed directly at you, just in general.

There is one person in particular here who has multiple posts downvoted to the point of his posts being hidden just in the last few days.
I think not being able to be a jerk and be anonymous would stop a lot of it.
That would solve so many things. I've always used my real name and you all know where I work, which makes me reconsider certain behaviors. Just like having my name above the door on my fastest car makes me behave better on the street.
Perhaps having multiple posts hidden in a short period should spark some introspection. It's likely not the result "groupthink" and an echo chamber, and more likely the result of antisocial behavior. State your beliefs/points, but don't be abusive. And if someone doesn't agree with you, it's okay to walk away.

I have the same concerns about the DV-to-hide function, but am pretty happy that GRM is:
a. keeping the forum alive
b. continuing to try innovate to make the place better
If it turns into a system for brigading or silencing dissent I assume they will just turn it off again.
Captdownshift (Forum Supporter) said:If you think downvotes are rough, wait until you find out about the concourse scoring system.
SVReX had the best explanation of that I've heard: it's a measure of how good a feature article they could print about your car.
I will say I do not use my real name, not to hide from stupid posts, but I really don't want my name, or any significant info shown publicly on the internet at all. Far more to avoid unwanted marketing then any sort of government paranoia.
And no, I do not have any sort of FacePoop account or anything broadcasting my every move and meal. The only site I know of that has my actual name is LinkedIn, and I am still really do not like that (but it's pretty necessary if you ever need to look for a job).
In reply to aircooled :
I agree completely!
I will willingly discuss any of my bad attitude, with anyone! I'm not here to post anonymously... just don't need my name out in the rest of the web!!!
5 years ago, since I'm very careful with the web, you could look up my name, and unless I told you the town I owned my house in, you couldn't find out anything about me. My internet usage has not changed, and now you could find out anything ya like. Stuff my family don't even know!!!
I have never downvoted any post. I doubt I ever will. If I dislike or disagree with a post, I simply move on. It would have to be something spectacular like "Human Sex Trafficking By Neo-Nazis and Why I Think Its Good For The Economy" for a downvote.
