My new boss told me during my job interview that he WANTED me to start a side hustle offering construction services to our doctor and staff at their homes.

And he said he WANTED me to overcharge them, and to overcharge him when he hires me.

His logic is is wants someone trustworthy and reliable to help his Doctor's with the things they need help with, but he doesn't want me to get bogged down in stupid little jobs that don't pay enough.

So, he's gonna open up his contact list to me, give me referrals to his wealthy friends, and is asking me to over charge them. smiley

Sounds like a good gig. devil

This was all great, guys. I'm working on the details, but I'm thinking about blogging on topics consistent with the dayjob, and monitizing that. It looks like it'll take a while for an audience to appear, but in the meantime, blog posts are qualifying continuing education units, so I'm still getting some value out of the work I do.

You can also see if any commercial blogs in your field are looking for paid reporters.

The moonlighting that I hate, but can't get away from is IT stuff. It's what I do all day and to extend that day into the late night just sucks most of the time. Even when I try to pass on jobs, the old customers keep calling me because I know all of the little tricks.

The moonlighting that I love is flipping. The cars are the most fun and have the biggest numbers, but also the biggest risk. Car parts are fun and stupidly easy. Find a part that sells for stupid money on ebay, but nothing at the junk yard. I do it with Saab parts: go to the yard, find the parts in decent shape, take them home and clean them (or not), and list them on ebay for less than the going rate. I end up getting old IT parts that I can sell too, but thats mostly a crapshoot.

Triple your price on the IT moonlighting. You will hate it less.

So many people undervalue their 1099 time. It needs to be way way higher than your hourly rate at a regular job!

Yep.

Its unlikely people keep calling because "you know all the little tricks". It's probably because you are cheap (and they trust you).

If you are not getting some people who say, "Gee, I'd like to hire you, but can't afford your rate", you are charging too little.

The price should (partly) help balance the work flow. Some of those people who "always call" will not call anymore when you raise your prices. That's OK- you will make more money, with less energy.

Thats the sweet spot. When your rates begin to limit your work flow.
