I moved into a free standing house this past summer from a condo and the heating bill is killing me! It's 2.5x what the condo was. The house Is a rental so no major changes can be made to it.
I'm thinking that a smart thermostat will help because my upstairs and lower levels get warmer than the main level where the thermostat is.
Any suggestions oh great hive mind?
What type of heating system do you have? Unless it is set up for multiple zones I don't think you can do much beyond moving the single thermostat. Heat rises etc. Try blocking off some vents or installing some dampers close to the furnace for better control.
The multiple temp sensors that I’ve seen will average the temperature reading between all of the sensors. So when the average temp across all sensors reaches a set point it’ll stop heating or cooling. Would that accomplish what you want? They can also keep the fan on for longer if needed.
EcoBee is probably the best for the kind of configuration you're describing. You can get the EcoBee3 Lite and 2 sensors for $250 ish.
Nest now has remote sensors as well but the Nest buy in is more expensive ($250 msrp + sensors at $30 for 1 or $100 for 3). If you poke around you can probably get the Nest 3rd gen close in price with sensors since Google discounted it heavily for Black Friday. I've owned multiple Nest devices but I'm not convinced it's that much better than the EcoBee from all the love EcoBee seems to get.
That is unless you're tied to Android. Then Nest is the better option because the development team for EcoBee can't seem to be assed to get it working as well as the iOS app for whatever reason.
Don't bother with the Honeywell Lyric, the remote sensor is wired for some god awful reason.
