OK i found this while looking for an 840 or 850.
i planned on an LS1 swap anyway. Does this car already have the LS installed? it sure looks like an LS in a 8 series engine bay.

I think if you re-read the ad, he means he intended to do an LS1 swap but didn't get around to it. That's probably the BMW v8 missing the engine covers, but I am not familiar enough with them to say for sure. It's not an LS.

Air intake is BMW as is the whole engine with shroud off.
The ad says he bought it with the intention of doing an LS1 swap. It does not say that he completed the swap.
yeah i saw that he intended to to the swap. but some times you get those ads that are better than described.
from memory it looked alot like the LS below to me. i didn't know the bmw v8 had plastic intake runners or coil packs.

you win.
but i think an ls powered 8 series would be awesome, just like any other ls swap makes the car infinitely awesomer

Am I the only one who sees it as rice? I see the idea of "throw an lsx in it" as bad as the stacks and obscuring traffic with a diesel pickup.....I like the engines, and agree they're the best thing gm has ever come up with......but at what point does it go the other way?(if it hasn't already)

I agree that they are becoming almost too common, but the lure of a car like the 8 series with a well mannered fairly reliable comparatively inexpensive 500hp motor and a 6 speed manual transmission makes me giggle.
LS engines don't have Bosch idle air motors, overhead cams, or coil-on-plug coils.
The end-feeding barrel-style intake is used by pretty much everybody nowadays. I'm not sure who did it first, but GM's been using them since the early-mid 90s on the 3800s, as was Audi on their V6 and V8 models.
I will say one thing for the Bimmer V8s.. they are smoooooth. Maybe not as powerful as the GM engines.. but a lot smoother. They better suit cars like the 8 series (the V12 is smoooooooother)
Hmm... a non-running 8-series... with a lot of non-working electrics... in Louisiana...
Screams Katrina car to me...
If the final bid price stays near the current bid (a bit less than $1200 as I post this), then maybe it could get running and prepped enough to be a Challenge car... but otherwise it looks like a parts car/scrap to me. Shame.
Mercedes used that style intake(in aluminum though) on the old 70's 280SE 4.5 V8. I dont know why they cover the engines with crappy plastic covers other than for NVH issues, but the engines look so much better naked.

I definitely don't. To me, that's like saying that a reliable, decent powered engine is rice. It's the opposite of rice. Instead of doing something to attract attention, you're doing something to make a fast car you can enjoy.
