I had a (at the time) a 30 year old 4Runner with 450,000 miles. The bleaders were cracked with standard wrenches easily. Why? Because it had never seen salt. I fear 5 year old salt slathered car's brakes. It's not old it's the salt.
In reply to The_Jed :
One of the many things that sucks about the rust belt. Any brake job could rapidly turn into a complete brake system replacement.

I suck. I can't even get a totally non-rusty ball-joint out with a pickle fork wedged in tight enough to yield the face of the knuckle, Kroil soaking for three days, and an air hammer beating on the knuckle and the joint. My Mapp torch only gets the thing to about 300 F, but tomorrow I get to play with all three.
I have no idea how I would survive in the rust belt.
The Samsung phone keyboard is really bad at autocorrect. I never know when it will go behind me and change its to it's (there, I typed the same key sequence twice) or throes to throws or whatever. It's worse than wrong, it's inconsistent.
I know I can try others, but minor rant is minor.
I'm in this crappy cycle of gaining 15lbs up to 200 then losing 15lbs back to 185. I feel good so I start to pig out and gain 15 lbs. Then, back to 185 and start eating again. I've probably done this 4 times over the last three years. Today I'm committing to getting back to 175 and staying there. Wish me luck.
In reply to Scotty Con Queso :
I'm right there with you. Me and the scale are not on good terms right now.
In reply to Scotty Con Queso :
Similar, just between 190 and 175. Been stuck on the high side for about a year, though, now. I'm sure my doctor won't be happy about it at my checkup next week.
In reply to eastsideTim :
My mental drive and focus increases 10 fold when I'm at my goal weight. Probably because I'm eating right and exercising.
Thank you for giving me adequate time to put this estimate together.
167 doors, 47 different hardware sets, and installation that includes the integration of half the doors with the access control system. To top that off you want it quoted in 3 different ways.
And you want it by 11 am Wednesday.
Yeah right.

I'm not sure if it is the same for me, but I know my body feels a lot better when I am eating right, regardless of weight. Too bad the healthy stuff doesn't taste as good as the unhealthy stuff.

I need a good night's sleep to lose weight and keep it off. Unfortunately, my lead likes to mess with my schedule. This week I am all evenings until my monday. Then I am in at 6a. I will not be getting good sleep that night or the night after as it will screw me up for a couple of days. Just when I get back on a decent sleep schedule again, he will throw me another curve.

We are finally getting high speed internet... sometimes and able to stream - a rant in it's own.
But we still use some satellite TV services, and occasionally have to contact them to make changes. They no longer answer their phone, you just go on hold and wait. So you have use chat on their website, which requires a laborious amount of question answering to verify your account. This time I answered almost every question wrong. Either because I didn't know and guessed, or made a mistake, and they still let me make the changes.
I'll be happy when I can finally fire their overpriced asses
eastsideWife borrowed my car when she volunteered at Southern Ohio Forest Rally last weekend. Despite my attempts to clean it, every time I've driven it since, I end up with a bit of really fine dust on my hands, like I've spent the day rallycrossing, without the fun part.
Rant 1: My mom is in town which is not the rant. The rant is she feeds the kids candy non stop and the dog always eats candy and wrappers that is left out by the kids. Last night, the dog was awake whimpering with a stomach ache until 1am which meant I didn't get to sleep until 1am.
Rant 2: We finally have a free weekend. Nothing to do. So my wife says "Let's drive to see my brother for the weekend!!!". So yeah, so much for just being home for the weekend and take care of chores that are weeks behind.
Discount Tire shipped me a replacement tire that FedEx lost. Total transit time: 2 days. That's not a rant. Well maybe against FedEx because they are incompetent and lost one tire.
Now I can schedule an appointment to have the full set mounted and balanced. The place I use makes you set up an appointment; no walk ins. So I go to their website to make the appointment. Welp, it looks like their online appointment system broke. And they aren't answering the phone. Cool.
In reply to stanger_mussle (Supported by GRM undergarments) :
Fedex has done that with a couple of my tire orders. The good news is the other tire will eventually show up. Might be a week, might be a month or two. Fedex won't care. The tire company probably won't care either.
I have two extra tires in my shop from these screwups. As well as a teak porch bench and an over-range microwave. No, we don't want the extra back. Just dispose of it.
Intake manifold is covered with old, runny logs, with nuts and seeds hanging out.

I tried to get a lifetime Unified Sportsman's license (hunting/fishing) using the NC online portal because it makes financial sense, and I have a bit of spare cash to use for it. I went through the whole process, went to check out and find that they require a hunter certification number. Ok. I had one, but I took it nearly 40 years ago, in a different state. I no longer have proof of this. However, when moved here in the 90s and I got my first NC license, having a hunting license from a reciprocal state was enough to prove I had taken the hunter safety course in my home state, so I never gave it much thought. I just kept renewing it every year, no hassles, no issues. It just doesn't work online.
It seems that if I go to an office, I can renew my current annual license or get a lifetime license without incident because I already have a hunting license in NC. I just can't do it online. Now I have to go talk to people. With a lifetime license, this will be the last time I ever have to do this, so there is that.
Just saw a thing indicating Toyota is working on an EV that pretends to have a clutch and shifter and engine noises. They're not alone.

^That^ is not brass. It's three crappy shades of brown and gold and screams at anyone that's paying attention that it's a poor quality piece of E36 M3 that's doing a quarter-assed job of pretending to be a quality item. It would be a hundred times better if it just was what it was.
Stop trying to build EVs that pretend to be direct and visceral in the manner of ICE cars and in so doing building stuff that's obviously one thing in another thing's costume and bad at both. Instead, build a really good EV that's direct and visceral in the way an EV can be. I feel like all we've seen is "commuter" stuff that's quiet and insular, and insane attempts to grab enthusiasts by having fake engine sounds and fake gear shifts. I know that's not 100% true, but that bullE36 M3 seems to exist in much greater volume than the part that actually matters.
I don't know how many times I've posted this in the 1767 pages of this thread. but..

Kind of a mixed minor rant/minor win. As I was turning on the stove to boil water for my tea this morning The Bat started barking like crazy from her perch on the couch by the front window and shortly thereafter someone knocked loudly on the front door. It was someone from our power company who was here to replace our outdated power meter with a newer (networked) meter. They had sent a letter about it a ways back and I'd forgotten about it.
The rant: C'mon- 8:15am is kind of on the early side to be doing that kind of thing you know? The Dancer was still in bed asleep (and was of course started awake by The Bat barking), and had he been 15 minutes earlier I'd have not been out of the shower. And, of course, swapping out the meter- through which all of the power to the house runs- dropped the power to the entire house for the 30 seconds or so it took him to switch them out. Thankfully most everything of consequence has a UPS on it to keep an interruption like that from being a problem- except for the new bigger 3D printer, because its line-level-powered heated bed pulls too much current and any of my UPS's beep in complaint every time the heater kicks on. So the print that I had started like 10 minutes prior was a loss.
The minor win: I had only started a print like 10 minutes prior and it hadn't even finished with the first layer, so having to restart it was far less of a loss than it could have been (if they'd come now for example I would have lost like 1/8 of a roll of filament on the interrupted print).

Rats....
I knew it was bound to happen since we have chickens. We saw them while sitting by the fire going from under the deck to the chickens run.
I tried premade bucket traps, no real success (only caught 2 juveniles) over multiple weeks.
Switched to the big snap traps with Slim Jim as bait, 18 in 3 nights.
2 large adults. One was just knocked unconscious by the snap trap and ended up in a bucket of water to finish him off.
6 mid size (assuming adolescent) in snap traps plus the original 2 in bucket traps.
10 the size of large field mice.
I may need to move to smaller traps since the little ones aren't setting off the traps when stealing the bait.
Im going away for 2 weeks and am concerned that my recent progress may be lost if the kids don't remember to take the chicken feed in every night and I'll have to start over when I return.

Try peanut butter as bait. They can't get it off the trip without tripping it and they love the stuff.
We would have years where they would overrun the neighborhood. My record at my last house was 28 over a 4-hour period with 5 traps. I would dump the dead, rebait the trap and place it. I would be walking back to the house and hear the trap snap. They were literally setting the traps off faster than I could get back into the house.
You might also see if the chickens will eat them. I know they will eat mice and if you can get them to realize that rats are food they may take care of the problem for you.
