Oh, do tell me more. I 'm googling right now

The wife and I just moved from Nexus 6Ps (both had battery issues) to Pixel 2s and are very pleased.

Unfortunately I don't have that much more information - the initial reviews praised the phone and hated the camera. Since then there have been multiple software updates for the camera and apparently it's pretty good now.
I trust MKBHD on everything tech. Based on his review, I'd skip the essential.

Moto fan as well. Moto G5 was 200$, and is pretty decent all around. I've had all the Moto X's before, but they are now using "alexa" as the assistant on the new X. That's just stupid.
I went from a casio phone to kyocera. I had my brigadier for years and finally replaced it with a duraforce pro.

Only thing it doesn't have is a sd slot, I assume it's something to do with waterproofing. It's loud, it's clear, the camera is great, I kept my old one in my pocket next to all sorts of stuff and it never got a single scratch.
I dunno about the other phones they sell but if they're like the pro they're fantastic.
