Word! I still haven't seen the remake.
The Seven-Ups, starring Roy Scheider. Chase was choreographed by the guy that did Bullitt's as I recall. This time, through NYC. Don't recall any green Beetles. :-p

That was excellent!
Damn that big Poncho was moooving
Agreed, most excellent. The use of the bus was pretty clever.
And now I know that the shock absorber wasn't invented until after 1973 Even the innocent bystander cars were flopping around!

The film itself was great but I certainly wouldn't call the chase part so. It was just scene after scene of the Minis driving through some weird, contrived scenario, totally disjointedly, and you never had the impression that there was any way they could have gotten from one shot to the next. Not to mention aside from some bumbling Italian cops, who also just sort of appear and disappear throughout for no reason, no one really seemed to be chasing them.
The remake was honestly a better car chase movie.
The French Connection?
Honestly its been so long since Ive seen it but it always comes up when talking about car chases.

This, quoted for truth.
I like Clive Owen as an actor, but I like it even more that the driving scenes are all in right hand drive cars with the stunt driver driving while Owen has a duplicate set of controls on the left. This short by Guy Ritchie defines "Hooning". Great driving.

Shocks don't last long here, they may have been new when the scene started. One little problem I have with the bus scene is that they seem to be leaving NYC on the Palasades parkway, where the bus shouldn't be, and the destination sign shouldn't read New York City if they are leaving.

Apparently the model was brand spanking new when they filmed this and there weren't a whole lot of cars available. They didn't all survive.
The Hire DVD was a bonus to BMWCCA members when they were still newish and my g/f has a copy. It also includes directors notes. Ritchie said they got 5 cars for the shoot - the jump was the first shot they did - and "the car never quite worked right after that..."
