My dad's cousin's daughter (that means my second cousin, right? As we share great grandparents) is Elizabeth Hosking. Half pipe snowboarder for Canada.
I've never met her (well, I may have, but she would have been an infant as I think our last big family reunion was about 15 years ago) but this house is cheering!
Very cool!!
was watching luge last night thinking that autocrossers should be able to do that well- many of the speed concepts are similar.

If you do the women's half-pipe qualifier live stream from nbcolympics.com, it's about a 2 hour event. Her first run is at 44:40 and second at 1:43:09. Unfortunately she didn't qualify but that is because both runs she just missed the landing of her big trick. I think she was absolutely in the running to qualify had she landed cleanly. Out of 24 entries the top 12 qualify for finals, and she ended 19th.
At the ripe old age of 16 however, there is always next Olympics!

Yeah, and if you get the highly modified FWD drivers who use giant slicks and no power steering, they will also have forearms of steel for the luge start.
Cool Runnings remake?
That is awesome. Just to make the field is huge. A good friend of mine is hoping to make the upcoming summer Olympics--lotta work, lotta dedication.

My ex B-I-L was an alternate in Atlanta in 96 in canoeing. He was slated to go to Sydney but fell out of it around 99.

Last night she qualified for finals!
Look for her tonight at 7:30 central time.
Your *second* cousin to have gone to the Olympics?
That's an impressive family.

I never knew it before a few nights ago but apparently in Super G skiing you don't get to practice the course. You get one hour to walk up and down and you get to memorize as best as possible then you get one run to let it rip. Best time wins.
That's as autocross as it gets!

Glad you updated this thread! For sure will keep an eye out tonight.
6th is still strong. And it's great to see the women trying new stuff.
I think my neighbor is in the half pipe. Last name Stark? Brother sister team both snowboarders in different events. I don't think they made any finals though.I don't know them but my wife does, but I know how exciting it is being connected to someone in the Olympics. My middle kid is hoping to swim for Canada in 2024. That will be a party of epic proportions.
So sorry I missed this thread last night and didn't get to see her compete live.
Not as cool as having a relative in the Olympics, but there's a woman Zoe Kalapos who was born where I live in Beverly Hills Michigan who represented America in the half pipe, didn't get through to the final, but I have the utmost respect for anyone who beats the odds to make it to the Olympics. IT's especuially cool as Beverly Hills is small enough that even people living 5 - 10 miles away but still in Metro Detroit haven't heard of it at times.
