No better icon for the generation, kids like us could only imagine the experience.
Talk about inspiration...
RIP Neil
They were talking about the moon landing tonight on the news like it was the last great thing, possibly the greatest we ever did. I'm afraid they're right.
One less hero to get to meet. In the morning I shall Launch an Estes in his honor.
I was at Kings Island in Cincinnati today where I learned the news. Kings Island is a few minutes away from Lebanon Ohio where Armstrong had a farm for awhile.
I live in the Cincinnati area and ran into him once....he was shopping at the local grocery story near his Indian Hill home. I was walking the opposite direction and when I saw him I almost froze. Its not everyday you see your hero. I was a few feet away from him and I said hello. He didn't respond and he kept on walking. As was his custom, he really didn't like to be bothered, especially by people like me who were hero worshipers lol! He was wearing dark glasses which may have made him unreconizable on purpose of course. I distinctly recall that no one else was making a fuss over him so I'm not sure anyone else knew who he was. It was a memorable occassion... a guy who did something that great was shopping like every other joe schmoe, buying deodorant or whatever it was he was getting. I remember seeing him loading up his car, which was an old chrysler sedan from the mid to late 80's... when this happened it was the late 90s so it was odd that he was driving such a car. It was only later that I learned he had a relationship with Chrysler.
I told this story to a buddy of mine once but he had me beat, he actually managed to get his picture taken with Armstrong, which in later years was pretty rare.
Here is an interesting book for anyone truly interested in Armstrong...my copy is signed by the author who came to town a few years ago to promote his work.

I just got done watching a senate hearing on CSPAN where Armstrong was testifying about how frustrating he was with the lousy state of our space policy. I would recommend googling it and watching it for anyone who cares that we now have to buy time on Russian rockets for our human space program....
oh by the way.... wife and I attended a Cincinnati Pops concert a few years ago where Armstrong served as a narrator. We were about 10 rows back, it was a glorious evening!
