Super Bowl nonsense

I should have prefaced I wasn't taking anything away from the Eagles, they clearly dominated and are very deserving of the Super Bowl. 

Years of disappointment sometimes make one  look for answers or place blame perhaps where it's not really deserved or warranted. This is after all just a game. There is always next year.

Totally get that, 3 NFC championship game losses in a row followed by a Superbowl loss will do that . For years I blamed that on the Pats cheating, as 05 was their last ring before Spygate broke, but the reality was they were just the better team. After a while you just come to expect the disappointment and wait for it to come, and that's what has made this year so surreal, we're just waiting and waiting for it and it hasn't come - yet. I just hope it holds out for one more game and they crush the damn Patriots. Yea, still salty about '05...

This is going to Brady's 8th Super Bowl appearance, right?

So I really don't care much about pro football-a choice I've made to preserve my safety in family situations-and I don't care much about this game at all. But did anyone see Belicheck and how little he cared about the AFC trophy? I thought it was hilarious.

I think it's because it's just one more step towards the only game of the season that counts for him. Of course he won the AFC trophy, he was always going to win the AFC trophy in his mind because you automatically get one when you get to the Superbowl and that was never in question. He did crack a smile when they won, though. Which is about the equivalent of doing cartwheels on the field for him.

Brady gets so much credit, but IMO Belicheck is a much bigger factor. He keeps that team on top year after year. Brady just executes, Belicheck plans. Like the difference between a great driver on an endurance race team and a great crew chief. The latter is the guy you need to win.

Is Romo going to commentate for the Superbowl? I sure hope so, he's on a different level than the others. He's talking strategy and plays instead of "did you see that guy jump?".

Oh, I agree completely--but the complete "What is this? I don't want this. Piece of junk. Thanks, I guess" attitude had me laughing.

The Jag defense practically gave the Pats one TD with two big penalties.

That plus the whoopsie right at the end of the first period with the late snap that gave the Pats a TD instead of giving the Jaguars a field goal at least. I guess that's why you have to play the game.

Think NBC has the coverage, so that probably means Collinsworth and Al Michaels (ick.) As an Eagles fan this pains me to my core to admit, but I really do enjoy Romo as a commentator. He's much more insightful than anyone else in recent memory and I enjoy his energy and enthusiasm as well.

Sorry, but can't go with you there.  I lived in and around Philly for 42 years.  Yeah, they're tough, demanding and very passionate.  But the hype over it is just bullE36 M3 and is so much cliche.  There are stupid fans in any city.  Check out articles of what happened in Chicago when the Cubs won.  Or any other city.  I was working on Broad St in the heart of center city the night the Phillies won the pennant in '93.  Was it a crazy party?  Hell yeah.  But did the city burn down in utter chaos?  Nope.  I'd agree Philly fans are tougher and more passionate than most other cities, but that's not a bad thing. 

The booing Santa thing was 1968...literally 50 years ago.  And if you check out the story, it's not as crazy as folk lure has turned it into.

Fly Eagles Fly!!!!!

This may be a Superbowl with one of the lowest ratings.  Two teams who are 400 mile from each other.  One of which has one so many time people have become bored of it and will likely blow the other team out (in historical, generally dull, Superbowl fashion).   Silliness that has made some stop watching in general.

I think it's pretty unlikely, but the only way this will be a good game is if the Eagles can win. 

Commercials have gotten pretty "meh" in the last few years also.  I suspect a lot of heavy handed "PC" / "Political" / "Social Justice" laced commercials will be presented also, which can be a bit much.

Now that you mention the commercials, some of the ones during the NFC game were of SB quality.  The Taco Bell "Web of Fries" commercial was hilarious as was the Bud Light "Dilly Dilly" King's motivational speech. 

And yeah... when you actually read into the booing Santa story and see the pictures of the guy, I probably would have thrown a snowball at him too.

I also agree Romo has been a surprising as a commentator. Maybe it's because he's much closer to how the game is currently being played, but his ability to call a play before it happens was sometimes uncanny.  

Romo has been great.  I wonder if ESPN will take a run at him to come to Monday Night Football and replace Gruden.

I actually think this may be a very highly rated Super Bowl from a viewership perspective.  Two of the largest markets in the country...one of which has long term fans, a bunch of bandwagon riders, and people who hate them and tune in to see if they'll lose...and the other with a fan base desperate for their first Super Bowl win.  A Jacksonville vs. Minnesota game would have been the NFLs nightmare, IMO.

I think his contract with CBS has him there for a few years.  Since I don't have ESPN, I hope he stays - at least until new streaming options become available.

I think it's partly because he's fresher but also because he has studied these teams far more exhaustively than the other guys. As a quarterback, he's supposed to be able to read the field more than someone like a linebacker would. That on its own is an insight into how these guys really think.

I love it when he tells us what's going to happen before it happens, and he comments on the design of plays instead of the abilities of the individuals.

This is what I was getting at earlier regarding the Vikings.

And I can't say I'm excited about NBC in general covering the big game. It's kind of like when NBC started covering the second half of the NASCAR season, it somehow seemed like something was missing vs when FOX covered the first half of the season. 

Even the NFL is jumping on the Superb Owl bandwagon

Dude, thats dinner at my house a dew times a month. Ain't nothing wrong with it.

But back to cheese dip. I think this year I'm going to start with my tried and true Velveeta base with Rotel, but add a can of Campbell's Firehouse hot & spicy beef & bean chili. Then I'm going to pan fry some beef kielbasa that has been cut into rounds and halved. Drain the kielbasa really well on some paper towels and add into the dip at the last minute to keep some of the crispness. And the kicker? A big pile of tater tots along with bowls to eat them from.

That sounds awesome! I tried my best to replicate the cheese dip pictured above based solely on that image for the Philly-Atlanta game in the divisional round, think it turned out pretty well. 

Still not sure yet what all I'm making for Sunday, but I'm planning on going all out. I've been waiting 13 years to throw this party and I'm gonna make it a damn good one!

So my youngest son and I are traveling to VT for a hockey tournament this weekend. My oldest son, and wife are staying home. We're both excited about the tournament,  some father son bonding(and probably the water park as well), but the trouble lies with the timing of the tournament, and the Superb Owl. The tournament ends on Sunday with either a consolation game at 8AM, or the championship game at 2:10 PM. I just found out that there are only 4 teams in our age bracket for the tournament, so our chances of making the championship game are at the very least decent(I'm not a prognosticator).

If we make the championship game we're probably not done with it, and the trophy/medal presentation until 3:30 PM or so, and then we have a 4 plus hour drive home. Smack in the time frame of the Big Game. On one hand I want to be able to watch the game, and the other hand I want our team to do well at the tournament. My thoughts are to maybe stay another night at the resort, but that is expensive, and possibly not even and option. Or Drive south for a while, and find a restaurant that has the game on. Both of those means that my son is most likely missing school on Monday, and I'm possibly missing work too. Neither is a huge deal I guess in the grand scheme of things, but he's already missing part of school tomorrow. The real kicker would be to make the championship game, lose, and miss the Superb Owl. Why did I agree to this tournament when I had a sneaking suspicion my Pats would be in the Big Game 2 months ago when we booked the trip?

Mazdax605, I'd go for the restaurant/sports bar option. In 10 years, what do you think your son will remember, getting home in time for school or having a cool experience with Dad?
