I got a maintenance plan as part of my deal when I bought my 2012 Mazda3. This includes oil changes every 5k and some other sundry benefits. It also includes a coolant change, new air filter, and throttle body cleaning at 2 years/30k. This was done yesterday (I suspect they just added something to the gas, honestly). I've had a couple of previous cars that were over 100k without having the throttle body cleaned. Is this something I should be doing as part of regular maintenance?
Not that regular, if your throttle gums up fast on a modern EFI'd car it means your air filter isn't working well. I'd say a cleaning interval on a healthy engine should be no less than 5 years.
Depends on the car and the age. On some cars, the crankcase vents to the air intake just before the TB. As the car ages and blowby gets worse, it can gum up the TB pretty good.
I've had some older cars that needed the throttle body sprayed clean with every oil change. On a new car... well at 80k, I've never cleaned the TB on my Scion.
