Your day definitely sucks worse, but one of my coworkers called out today because there's a bull loose in his back yard.
For some of you this might not be an unusual occurance, but he lives in northern New Jersey...

Z31, its usually small businesses that operate like this, because they make the business personal. A corporation cares if the work gets done. A small business owner directly feels slighted if an employee isn't making him money because "he pays them".
The flipside is the economy is bad enough there that the employees willingly allow the owner to break the law in order to have a job. Fear is a great tool for controlling people.
I would not think most small businesses operate like that, I would guess the opposite. Because they make it personal they care about the well being of the employees, and their families.
Unfortunately, you'd be wrong. It's even worse in "desired" occupations, like design.
So sorry to hear it, Paul. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/unhappy-18.png)

The only people I know of personally, that work on salary and ALWAYS work more than 50+ hours per week our restaurant managers.
The last two companies I've worked for expected OT work weeks on salary and 24x7 access via blackberry. My wife's last three jobs have been this way. It would seem this is the new normal since the Great Recession.
Paul, sorry to hear. All you needed was a portion of a day off to deal with pressing family business. This guy had no right nor reason to treat you that way. I was treated like this at my last job. I held on to it just long enough to go work at a place that appreciated good employees. I hope you're able to do the same and soon. You deserve it.
First, I'm very sorry for what your family and the deceased's family are going through right now. You're right, it sucks.
Second, I like Capt Downshift's idea about having a lawyer write to HR, but, in the event the company's too small for that, you might consider getting a message to your boss's supervisor, or HIS supervisor, to say: "This isn't about me – I can look after myself – but I can't be the only person affected by this individual's poor attitude and offensive behavior. You might want to look into how his choices are costing the company goodwill, reputation, and, basically, money." The last word should get their attention.

FIFTY.
This has been the new normal for quite awhile now. It sucks even worse when it happens during your vacation time.

Reminds me of a time when a highway here was closed due to an accident....it was car vs. Bear. Who the eff hits a bear?

Not a chance that will work. "The boss" I referred to is the owner of the company.

I appreciate all of your input.
I've cooled down a bit now, and am thinking a little more level headed.
I have come to the realization that it is time. I am casting a broader net than just a job hunt. I'll be relocating.
So, I am formulating a plan, and contacting folks I know all over the country. Something good will come of this, and I am not going to roll over.
Maybe it's time for me to build the solar micropower plant farm I've wanted to do.
Thanks again.
Make sure the owner knows what the final straw was.
SVreX, what kind of work you looking for? (the wife just started as a recruiter, probably not your area of expertise, but you never know)

You know I'll help you any way I can!
Plenty of work in ND right now, if you are relocating. Park you and your stuff at my place as long as you need; I've got several spare rooms and I'd gladly put a roof over your head and feed you for a third hand with some construction projects.

If you're thinking about the shale oil fields, that might not be such a good idea based on the reports in some of the financial media I've read recently.
To SVreX: Oh. Well, I guess it's all up to Karma now, and Karma, as we all know, holds a grudge. Best of luck as you move on.

Baker Hughes and Halliburton are both making sizeable layoffs in Q1.
Our business is down and we do lots of supplying to oil/NG rigs. Furloughs and layoffs last year and frozen raises for Q1-Q2.
We need the price of oil to come back up.

Business is business. I would argue with you that the kind of person who "typically" goes into business ownership is a driven one. Note I didn't say that corporation's were nicer, kinder, or cared more about their employees; it just simply isn't worth their time to bother with such things. In a small business, the owner has more direct control over ALL of his employees, not just upper management. He is more personally invested in the overall business, including what his employees are doing, than a middle/upper/CEO management.
I've worked for plenty of small, medium, and large businesses. Corporations allow you to get away with murder, as long as the rules are followed :)
