Not to flounder the thread or anything but I've been trying to break my kids of an annoying habit lately. Their behavior hasn't changed in any way (standard 9 and 12 year old stuff) but they picked up saying "please forgive me" in place of "i'm sorry". It's some E36 M3 their mother has laid on them I'm sure but I've been trying to get across to them that saying it so flippantly and quickly completely devalues their words.

Tell them they can't ask for forgiveness until they are ready to admit verbally EXACTLY what they did wrong and how it hurt someone.

That should move it in the right direction.

But honestly, don't sweat it. They are too young to understand how to effectively take responsibility, nor the nuances of effective speaking.

It's a good excercise for them. They will learn to use it better later.
