Pretty much the definition of "more money they you know what to do with".
Certainly not a new thing though:
i see it as hundreds, if not thousands, of good paying middle class jobs to build and maintain the places.
Stories like that make me feel all socialist. How much is enough for some people? Rich is great and the driving force behind the American Dream but at some point the ultra rich need to dial it back.

. I have to admit if I had a big pile of FU money I'm sure I could do some stupid things with it. Ideally the place would be big enough that my wife and girlfriends never met but were all comfortable.
To a point I can understand it. From what I've read and heard the press and paparazzi make it tough for famous people to get out and do things. Why not build a palace that can cater to your every wish and those of you're 2-300 closest friends and relatives without having to worry about being hounded.

Taking this to it's logical(?) conclusion if I could afford the 25 acre plot of the largest one in the story I would immediately start digging up the dirt. But I wouldn't truck it through the neighborhood (that would be rude after all). Nope, i'd build a huge underground garage/house complex and then put the dirt back on top. Import a few big old trees (assuming there were none to start with) and some shrubs and let nature reclaim it. Maybe build a little shack or two that are actually entrances to my garage bunker complex. Oh, and keep my derelict Ferraris and Porches out in the open while awaiting restoration. Maybe throw in a rotting vintage house trailer for good measure.
That should piss off the neighbors WAY more than a mega-mansion next door! 
i'd build a race track that goes right thru my overly large house..

I am sure some of it is "look at me" stuff. But I think a lot of this ultra rich spending stuff seems to be just trying to figure out what to do with all the money. Dumping a huge amount of money into a house will not guarantee a good return, but it's a reasonably safe place to store a bunch of it.

I would go full on castle if it was me. Complete with a mote filled with Crocodiles. But I wouldn't build it in LA. Probably South Dakota.

It's not "only when it's convenient" and I hope I'm not a shiny happy person. I don't begrudge anyone the path to riches. But I do begrudge people getting wildly, obscenely rich and using their wealth to affect the system allowing them to use those without the absurd resources needed to maintain even a reasonable level of comfort.
Wealth is good. Disgusting levels of wealth, not so much.

Better make it a heated moat. I don't think the Crocodiles will take to South Dakota winters.

I agree, I have customers with extreme, over-the-top homes. I wouldn't want one, I'd need staff. Plus, my normal house in suburbia is enough to keep me busy.

It's their money so they can spend it as they wish, but geez - some of those places pictured in the article look like one of Saddam Hussein's mansions. I guess just because you're rich doesn't mean you have good taste.

The Crocs would follow me to my winter home in southern Louisiana. It would be a smaller castle though, however both would be equipped with working dungeons, and trebuchets, lot's of trebuchets.
