Just found an old G-shock watch that needs a new battery. Looking online, all of the how to articles indicate silicone grease should be used to lubricate the seal when closing it back up in order to maintain the water resistance. My questions:
-
Where to get silicone grease in a reasonable quantity for a reasonable price?
-
What to do with the extra grease once the watch is sealed back up?
To be honest, I haven't looked online for silicone grease yet. My expectations are that it is available from specialty vendors in 0.1 ounce tubes for $29.95 + $8.99 S&H or at Harbor Freight in 2.5 gallon cans for $8.99.
Any recommendations from the hive?
The auto parts stores usually have little packets of dielectric grease at the counter for 99-cents. Pretty sure that stuff is usually silicone.
Napa sells Sil-Glyde. I think you can get it at the zone / advance too.

How so? Straight from the Dow Corning #4 PDS "Used as a seal and lubricant for cable connectors, battery terminals, rubber
door seals, switches and rubber and plastic O rings and as a assembly lubricant for various metal on plastic and metal on rubber combinations"
Your local dive (SCUBA) shop will have it.
I use it to lubricate the o ring on my waterproof camera housing.

O-ring grease = dielectric grease.
silicone is an insulator. Dielectric grease needs to pass current
I have a tube of Permatex Dielectric Tune Up Grease in the garage. Looking at the Permatex Data Sheet it contains silicone. Data Sheet
The wiki implies dielectric grease is silicone grease, but it doesn't actually come out and say it. Wiki
I think I'll just use the dielectric grease I have and see what happens.
Dielectric grease is not conductive.

Common misconception, "dielectric" is a type of insulator, the pressure of the connector pins pushes through it to bare metal.

plus 1 - Lowes Silicone Grease for $3.97. It's a waterproof grease that plumbers use.
my mistake.. I was thinking of Conductive grease.. which we use on our 400amp twist lock service in the theatre.

Maybe we are talking about two different things, but...
