The volcano exploded with 50 people on it. Still too dangerous for rescue people to land. 5 known dead, 27 still missing. Some where in the Caldera when it blew

That would be a bad way to go. I guess when you go and climb up an active volcano, it is a calculated risk, and sometimes you may get some great photos and have a great experience and other times you may be killed by an eruption.
I'm guessing that many of the deceased did not understand the risk they were taking by going up there. RIP.
Dang. My heart goes out to everyone affected.
My wife asked why people were on an active volcano and I reminded her that we have climbed not one but two active volcanoes including Kīlauea while it was erupting and Mount Ngauruhoe in New Zealand. "Oh, right."
Looks like most of the people who were on the island when it erupted were on an excursion from a cuise ship.... (a ship we briefly had a reservation for)
My wife and I summited Vesuvius. I was anxious the whole time. Heck, I even get anxious in Montreal -- I know Mt. Royal is long dormant, but anxiety isn't rationale.
I disagree that it was a bad way to go. I can't think of a more unique, spectacular way to die at the hand of Mother Nature. On the death by tourism scale, this was much better than being trapped below decks of a dive boat and closer to being on board an exploding rocket launch as a space tourist.
I read one guy saw the explosion as he jumped out of the the airplane for skydiving. I had to laugh, thinking "ooOOoo... how berkeleyed am I?"

Welp, not landing there!

In the case of Whakaari, it's pretty unpredictable, active, and explosive volcano. It's not it's been dormant for a few decades, it erupts in explosive fashion every couple of years. The sulpher mining operation was abandoned and thoroughly buried in ash because it's erupted so many times.
Unforunately, due to the lack of research and observation history of White Island, scientists were just not very sure what kind of indicators the volcano would give in advance of eruption. Now they know better, but at the expense of lives.
Currently, the death toll is at 6 confirmed with another 8 missing.
