The McLaren concept is the first good-looking and "realistic" closed-cockpit model I've seen - the others are unrestricted sci-fi F1 concepts that happen to be closed-cockpit (like the Red Bull X-2000 series and Cyber Formula cars). That Red Bull car is seriously good looking too.
I suppose the wider wheels are there to accept less sticky but more durable tires...they sure look good!
Wider tires would be to increase mechanical grip so the cars can keep cornering speeds up without relying on Aero grip as much.
That's one of the big problems with passing, the guys behind can't get close enough in the corners to make a run down the straight. Hence KERS, DRS, etc.
