I am as dumb as a rock and I can see that this will not work as intended.
Why don't we reintroduce wolves to D.C. to curb deer overpopulation?
The story does go on to answer it's own question, but still.

I'm less concerned with deer than I am with all the rats and snakes and parasites in DC... but we'll not get political here.
Crossbows are the answer. Quiet. Shorter effective range.
Less danger for a missed shot from a deer rifle going a mile and hitting someone.
Would the wolves help us curb lobbyist, bureaucrat and congresscritter overpopulation in DC. Why not.
There is a wolf sanctuary near Houston I visit from time to time. There is a guy there named Remus there who thinks he is a giant lap dog. At least with me. Not sure if he likes deer for dinner. They feed him raw meat. Most wolf hybrids I know are kind of like big dogs who are friendly till they eat the furniture.

Coyotes have been doing that in Dallas for years. They have town meetings where they want the city to authorize urban coyote hunts. The police have their hands full with human predators so that never happens.

Oh I forgot about the jackals. Don't forget the jackals. It's a real infestation.

I have also seen coyote/German shepherd coydog mixes running wild at a lake near my house where coyotes and stray dogs hang out. For bigger dogs that gives a whole new meaning to being "grabbed by a coyote". Waiting to see what pit bull/coyote mixes look like.
Just this last weekend there was a Freakonomics radio show on NPR about the wolf population and deer that was pretty interesting: https://freakonomics.com/podcast/can-the-big-bad-wolf-save-your-life/
South Carolina will pay you $75 for every adult coyote you kill. They are devastating the fawn population in many areas, not to mention the dogs, cats, and other small animals they eat.
As for wolves. They are already gone.
Shoot one in Dallas and you get a ticket for illegally discharging a firearm. They warned us about that at the community meeting on coyotes.
Deer are rampant here in KS too. There's a herd of 45-55 that crosses the road less than 1/2 mile from my house. A group of 6 is in my yard every day, 20 feet from the living room. We have lots of coyotes, too. They seem to coexist quite fine.

You typically aren't allowed to shoot firearms within any city limits.
Got plenty of coyotes in my town outside of Boston you can have to help with the deer. They used to like to hang out in my yard (which drove my dog nuts). Only recently did I start to get nervous, though...
You might also be surprised at how few deer Wolves will eat. It's one of their last resorts. The effort required to fell a deer is not proportional when there is a never ending supply of rodents and other easily-caught prey.... like cocker spaniels, tabby cats, and leftover pizza in trash cans.
What they discovered in other environments is that the wolves primarily displace the larger prey as they seek less-dangerous pastures and then you're left with an overpopulation of wolves.
In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :
And then the extra wolves die and the environment achieves balance. Or at least that's what was supposed to happen before humans got involved.
My forebears came to this country in the early 1800’s. They, and many like minded folks, had the foresight to kill anything that could kill us.

Had one, was raised with a Siamese cat .....the only cat period, all the others that entered the yard were kinda stiff when I got to them.....ended up passing from complications with grand mal seizures.....sweet sweet boy miss him still
The Simpsons covered a similar scenario a long time ago. Where is the sensible Seymour Skinner when we need him.

We have a heavily populated island in the harbor off of Portland, Maine. It was overrun with deer. After years of complaints, they hired a marksman to take out the herd. It went off without a hitch, one deer required two bullets. The deer count was 200 plus. I cannot however see how they could come to an agreement on this in DC. Worked really well in Maine though. Maybe spin it as venison for the homeless?
