Just signed up for the newsletter. I "should" have a bike by then and would be interested in attending with you and caravaning as you pass through PA. Hopefully, the schedule will work with the currently unknown 2016 DH racing schedule.

If you guys are rolling thru - I'll join the parade for the last 150 miles or so. I have some good back road routes thru NE PA and the Catskills to get to that area. NOt so much fun for a trailer though if bringing an RV or something for the family to sleep in.

That's all kinds of cool, wrapped in a layer of bacon and awesome sauce.

Sounds like a plan to me!

As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing better. Turned over 71k miles a few weeks ago, and has been back and forth across the country twice. I made it across the entire state of Oklahoma without touching pavement (except to cross it) in one day. High speed, low speed, on road, off road....it does it all.

And a few videos, if you're feeling bored at work today.

I feel that way about my GSA too but it does it in a way that is sort of very businesslike. I don't know much about the KTMs except that they are roughly as capable give/take in certain areas but this is how I think of the comparison:

In reply to The Gathering Darkness:

Yeah, that's pretty accurate. I've ridden my 950, a few 990s, the f800GS, and the r1200GSA (not the water cooled one) and the KTMs feel much more lively than the BMWs. The BMWs are incredibly competent and are arguably much better on the street since the KTMs vibrate more and have less wind protection, but the BMWs never felt exciting to me. The KTM absolutely feels like a race/rally bike that happens to be street legal. Ironically, if I were comparing to cars, I'd say the BMW bikes are like the average Mercedes sedan, and the KTM is an older pre-turbo BMW M car, including the quirks and occasional maintenance that go with it.

Just an update for 2016. July 25th will be the date if enough people register.

As someone who is just moving towards starting to ride (project bike acquired), this thread makes me look forward to it more and reinforces the idea of learning to do it the 'right' way. So bravo for that.

Of course, you can cross OK in 30-something miles if you do it in the right spot

It looks like I won't be attending after-all. I've just been flattered and tossed out at the same time. I'm going to have to find another venue.

I found this in my inbox today:

Walter, I got your New York Safety Track registration form. Glad you liked it so much you want to come back! Last year you had a lot of fun tearing up the track with the NYST coaches. You are clearly a fast rider that enjoys a spirited pace. Don't know how you get that GSA beast to corner like that, but it's impressive to say the least. My course has a training twist to it that is more in line with with street riding than track riding. I’d like to keep the few remaining spots available for intermediate riders. I suggest you spend more time at NYST for their regular track day program. Passing a Gixxer rider on that GSA will be quite thrilling. Get to know Greg and company, they're fantastic folks. You’ll get more out of their track days and they run them frequently. Sincerely, xxxxx

Gad zooks, what are people doing up there in July? Go to book a room and all the places are booked up!

Ended up finding a place almost an hour away.

I'm getting older and softer. I treasure a comfortable bed in an air conditioned room. Especially in July. No big deal, I'll likely hang around before tottering off.

I only read the 1st post but you shouldn't be surprised. The GS is one of the best handling, easy to ride fast bikes there is. Also, you should go try a new water-boxer. Handles the same but has way way more grunt.

I have an offer in on a 0 miles '15 KTM 1190 Adv. It's delicious. The water boxer left me feeling like it was nice but boring and no one should ever be bored at that price. I actually liked my '07 better down low. I think they are struggling with the legacy of that awkward lump like Porsche is stuck selling flagship 911s when the Cayman is the better design. BMW should have changed the motor entirely when they put the radiators on.

I too had an '07 Adventure. Artic White...I think the only color they came in. Except for the delicious handling (enhanced even more with Ohlins front and rear) I was underwhelmed in every way. Coming from the Jap-4 world, that thing felt like it was tied to an anchor. When we got to the twisties though, it was obvious who the boss was.

Two years ago I traded up for whe water cooled GS. I skipped the Adventure this time. Been there and done that. This thing will match pace (well not quite but close) with my jetted FZ1 in a straight line. In the turns? Well, you know that story.

I think the GS magic comes from the steering geometry. Some say it's the telelever but I don't believe it. See, it doesn't really handle any better than those Japanese machines you're smoking. It just feels like it does. It doesn't make you work for it. It builds your confidence. A really good rider will demonstrate that to you. For most amateur "occasional track day" folks like myself however, we will be seconds faster on a GS than just about anything else that big.
