That's funny- I had a similar upbringing. In fact I'm pretty sure I had to swear to my mom at some point I would never get on a motorcycle. Luckily four wheelers and snowmobiles didn't fit the two wheel criteria, and I had friends with those 
Maybe I'll broaden my search outside of Michigan and see what turns up.

I paid $2000 for my DRZ 400. It's a '04 or '05 (maybe older). Hasn't run in nearly 10 years, but otherwise stock and in good condition. Probably paid too much, but it was from a friend who needed cash.
My plan is to use it purely for learning on and then to sell it and buy a KTM EXC350. No plans to go down the rabbit hole of modding it. A buddy did that and it proved to be a fool's errand if the goal is a good off road bike.
I had an 05(?) drz400s that I did a mild build on. They're somewhat lacking in power and they're a bit portly, but they're pretty good. The e model makes better power but is not street legal from the factory. Later ones have a better cam chain tensioner and better dampers.
