Then we climbed a different dune!

You would have to force me to spend a little time instead of all the time.
In one trip you have done about half the unique summertime Michigan things I did in 30 years of growing up and living there.
My parents were so cheap about so many things, I am sometimes surprised we went anywhere. If the Mackinaw Island ferries had had a steerage class that is how we would have gotten to the Island.
"Can we rent bikes?"
"No. Too Expensive"
"Can we get some fudge?"
"No. Too Expensive"
"Can we have lunch at a restaurant?"
"Too Expensive. We have crackers and Vienna sausages in the car"

Sad but true. I remember one year we were broke so Dad drove us out to a burned out warehouse and told us Sesame Place caught fire.

Absolutely fantastic photo, Tom. Car stuff being ignored for a moment, this shot is the one you want to save for your own family history. Hell, if you end up having kids of your own, this is what you want to show the descendants when they ask what grandpa & grandma were like. Young man, when it comes to photos..you have "the eye". (insert "thumbs up" icon here..)

The food is very average, but the chubby-mary's are epic and help hide the food. Trouble is chub is getting rare in the lake.
So what did you think of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive? It's great for seeing some beutiful scenery and some nice walks plus the dunes, but were you thinking 'Man why can't we use this as a Tarmac rally stage'? I konw I always do.
We loved the scenic drive.. honestly, we've loved it all. Did not expect Michigan to be so awesome. It's really a great place to vacation, especially for families.
Like a lot of you guys, I also grew up under an iron rule of cheapness (my father once took us to Kennedy Space Center but wouldn't pony up for any of the tours, so we looked in the visitor's center and left) -- so we are bound and determined to leave nothing on the table when we travel. I'd rather eat the Viennas and crackers at home, anyway.

Talk about sad memories. Same thing here.
We went to Fla one year and stayed with relatives who had a house on Lake Placid. Dad went to buy an out of state fishing license and Great Uncle said, "the game wardens never check this lake". Well they did and the $100 fine killed the rest of the vacation (this was 1964 dollars).
I've gotta say, that is the most disgusting looking drink I have ever seen! Hope it tasted better than it looks!

Sounds exactly like me - when we visited I made my family walk the island (and they were not happy) - we did however pop the money to get us into the Grand Hotel to wander around.

I'm not cheap, I like to vacation to the max, but I've never popped for the Grand hotel! I did make the mistake of not taking our bike up last time. ugh, that was an expensive mistake!
I think we popped for the Grand Hotel $10 entrance fee as we were dog tired and those rocking chairs on the porch looked inviting to us.
Right - Dirt road
Wrong - Straight Dirt road - needs curves! - otherwise just AWESOME

See this is it. I keep touting Michigan’s merits. I tell you the northern shore of Lake Michigan (inc the Door county side) is flat out the best part of the US I've seen. No doubt once I escape the rat race I'm moving up there for 9 months a year, a condo in Florida is required for Jan-March per SWMBO (a Michigan Native), but I absolutely love it up there and the whole state.
Welcome to living up north - many of our lakes look like that.

We didn't pop for the Grand, exactly, either. They were charging $10 admission "but good toward the $40 per person lunch buffet," so we said no thanks and ate at The Jockey Club at the Grand. Less than half the price, great food and service in an old-club atmosphere. I do still have enough of my dad in me that I'm pretty adverse to getting absolutely hosed.
And the Chubby Mary was delicious. They give you crackers to eat it with... a drink AND a snack!
