Okay, I'll say it... THAT STANCE!
If you still think that Lexus’s flagship sedan, the LS 500, is powered by a 5.0-liter V8, well, you’d be wrong. Since the complete refresh for the 2018 model year, power has come from a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6.
A V6 engine doesn’t mean a lack of power, of course, as the LS 500 delivers 416 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque. Lexus claims a zero-to-60 time of 4.6 seconds.
So, what is new for 2019? Refinements, mostly. Amazon Alexa and CarPlay come standard along with something called Lexus Safety System+ 2.0. Here, we’ll let Lexus explain: “LSS+ 2.0 adds daytime bicyclist detection and low-light pedestrian detection along with Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to further expand the scenarios in which the LS is designed to provide additional safety to the driver and passengers.”
The LS 500 comes with either rear- or all-wheel drive, with our tester sending power to all four wheels. The options boosted MSRP from $78,420 all the way to $103,865.
Yup, I’m still a fan of these big Lexus sedans. It’s not a Benz or a BMW but, rather, has matured into its own thing. Power remains wicked-smooth, doors close with a confident thud, and the thing just goes down the road nicely.
The twin-turbo V6 delivers V8 performance. Don’t fret about getting two less cylinders than the badge on the tail would suggest.
Lexus’s touch pad is a unique animal. It’s not a knob (hello, BMW) or a touch screen. It can take a few minutes to get used to. Then it makes sense. Just give it a few.
Does it need all-wheel drive? I’ll let your conscience and weather forecast answer that one.
