Car Catcher: Alfa Enters the Performance Saloon Market With the 164

Built on the same platform (with some tweaks) as the Saab 9000, the Pininfarina-designed Alfa Romeo 164 had its sights firmly set on disrupting things in the performance luxury car market, which at the time was dominated by German offerings. This 1991 Alfa Romeo 164 S marks the first year of the model’s U.S. importation, and has the slightly hotter, 200-horsepower V6 that came standard on all S variants. The automatic transmission wasn't up to the challenge put forth by the car’s 3.0-liter V6, but fortunately this Alfa comes with the more desirable manual. Find it on offer at Mecum's Kissimmee show January 2-12.
