Considering that only nine are said to have been built, the chances of acquiring a real Maserati 450S are fairly unlikely. Instead, a well-built recreation may be the next best thing.
This 1958 Maserati 450S Recreation may fit the bill nicely, reported to have been built using a number of actual Maserati components and assembled “using construction methods consistent with period processes” by Peter Bowden and “other specialized vendors.”
That means the aluminum body was formed over a wooden buck by hand, though a thicker grade of material was chosen to “avoid the frailty of the thinner panels used on the original racecars.” The correct space frame was also recreated using 4130 chromoly steel tubing.
Under the hood of this 450S Recreation is a 4.7-liter, four-cam V8 engine that sends its power to the road through a “vintage” five-speed ZF transmission. Not everything is old-school, however, as the car’s fuel tank hides an FIA safety fuel cell with an electric fuel pump.
