Car Catcher: A Well-Optioned, Early Series II BMW 507

When introduced in1956, the BMW 507—a roadster version of the 501 and 502 sedans—was meant to help the brand secure a foothold in North America thanks to projected sales of thousands of units produced. Unfortunately, that plan failed to come to fruition, due in part that the largely hand-built sports car showing up in dealerships with a price tag of $10,000 (approximately $95,000 in today’s money). As a result, a little more than 250 examples were built and sold, forcing BMW to pull the plug on the 507.

The 507 was not a total failure, however, as the 507 helped to cement BMW as a serious performance manufacturer, with the car’s legacy going on to inspire future BMW models like the Z8.

This particular 1957 BMW 507 Roadster is an earlier Series II example reported to be the 77^th example built by BMW and comes finished in a black exterior over a butterscotch leather interior. As well, the car is said to have been optioned with a removable hard top, disc brakes and Rudge wheels.

The listing notes that this 507 has a well-documented history from new, including its original purchase in Rome—where the car experienced a head gasket failure and had its entire engine replaced—and its importation into the United States in 2000.

This BMW comes powered by a 3168 cc V8 that was professionally replaced by BMW sometime after it was purchased. This powerplant is capable of around 150 horsepower and is paired to a four-speed manual transmission.
