First vehicles of Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood era? Soapbox derby cars.

What were the first vehicles to come from Goodwood for Rolls-Royce? These hand-built gravity race cars, aka soapbox derby racers. They were built for the Goodwood Festival of Speed Soapbox Challenge in 2001 and 2002. Now they’ve been restored to their former glory.

RR-0.01 hints at the lines to come for the first Goodwood Phantom. It is constructed from carbon and glass fiber, with composite honeycomb plates and aluminum components. Its monocoque shell bore a resemblance to the Phantom VII. It won the award for best design at the 2001 Festival of Speed.

The Silver Ghost, the winner of the 1911 London-to-Edinburgh Trial, inspired the RR-0.02. It uses formula racing-style steering racks and slick tires to reduce rolling existence. RR-0.02 is constructed from aluminum and  carbon fiber, among other materials. It won the 2002 soapbox race and the Merit of Excellence.

After being in the main reception area in the Home of Rolls-Royce, the recently restored soapbox derby cars will now be displayed in the headquarters of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club at Hunt House in Northamptonshire.

Very cool. We used to run our own karts down the hill at the school behind our house. Our neighbors had the fastest one. :)
