The Legends Of The Autobahn moved to a new location this year, the Bayonet and Black Horse in Seaside. There they had an amazing array of Audis, BMWs and Mercedes.
The event had new location woes, with a mix-up on parking location, but the new venue is beautiful and easy to walk, with fantastic vistas and excellent spots for dining. Fortunately, we got there early to sort through those issues and still have plenty of time to enjoy the fine examples of German vehicles.
The imposing presence of John Heller’s 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300 D Adenauer made it an immediate eye-catcher. John found the car in the St. Louis area 10 years ago and completely restored it, doing all of the mechanical work himself.
Michael Leinenkugel brought his BMW E31 850i by invitation of Griot’s Garage. The car is a driver, but looks immaculate, which sort of explains the growing interest in these sophisticated automobiles.
The Audi Club was out in full force with early Ur Quattros vying for space with newer RS3s and RS4s. They also had one of the biggest collections of R8s on the West Coast.
California car clubs have been around for years, but the S-Klub LA redefines the genre. The level of customization is hard to describe in words, but the passion these owners have for the three-pointed star is readily apparent.
If you’re a German marque fan, this event is worth checking out next year. It’s completely free, although you have to prepay for parking.
