Instead of buying a new window regulator, we fixed ours

While making one repair, why ignore another? While we had a door panel off, we took the time to fix the passenger’s broken quarter-window regulator.

With the door panel off, it was easy to find the three bolts that hold the regulator in place. Once these bolts were removed and the regulator pulled from the window, we saw the problem: The regulator’s backing plate–the piece that holds the assembly together–had come off, causing the two gears to lose alignment.

While new regulators are available from Corvette Central and others, they cost a bit over $200. Considering that price, we decided to first try fixing the one we already had.

While disassembling and cleaning the unit, we saw that the misaligned regulator had damaged the teeth on the gears. Could we repair the broken teeth with a file and Dremel tool?

Yes!

Once we were satisfied that the teeth were correctly meshing again, we greased and reassembled the mechanism, this time correctly peening on the backing plate.

With everything back together, our quarter window now opens and closes perfectly.

Next, we can go on to fixing the interior door panel.
