Who can turn down the opportunity to drive a vintage Morgan? While in Los Angeles, we visited Morgan West and took a spin in their 1956 Morgan +4. The four-seater had just completed a 1000-mile rally, so all it took to get on the road was moving a few other Morgans out of the way.
On the road, the Morgan behaved exactly as you’d expect a 1950s sports car to behave: It was minimalistic, speedy, noisy and a bit stiffly sprung. One charm– or idiosyncrasy–of all Morgans is a front end that bounces over the bumps in the road. This one was no different. Truth be told, it added a real vintage flair to our drive.
Despite being nearly 60 years old, the +4 felt remarkably solid for what is essentially a prewar design. It had ample power for Los Angeles’s traffic. The Morgan turned plenty of heads, too, even in jaded L.A. We received plenty of thumbs-ups, and one older gentleman stopped us to recount stories of the Morgan he owned many years ago.
If a Morgan +4 is on your short list, we recommend checking out this one. It’s being offered at a market-correct $40,000.
