Porsche built the 911 RS to homologate its RSR race car. Of those, 1587 used the 2.7 power plant. Even fewer, 55, had the 3.0. This is one of the latter, with Targa Florio experience.

The 3.0 used much of what went into the RSR, including the engine (albeit detuned) and the four-piston brake calipers and drilled brake discs. Porsche rated the 3.0 at 230 horsepower. Yet, the RS 3.0 weighed just 1984 pounds, thanks to lightened glass, a composite hood and engine cover panels, and removal of all sound deadening efforts.

Seeing how much of the RSR’s DNA was in the RS 3.0, Italian club racer Antonino Guagliardo acquired it and entered Porsche into the 1975 Targa Florio. With co-driver Libero Marchiolo, they unfortunately retired early. The car must have made an impact on Guagliardo, as he retained the car for three decades.

Find this 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0 for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of €1,000,000 - €1,500,000 (approximately $1,150,000-$1,700,000 USD).
