One year after winning the Daytona 500, Mario Andretti returned to the “World Center of Racing” to race the road course and compete in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1968. His ride? This Alfa Romeo T33/2 that he co-drove with Lucien Bianchi. Bianchi later won the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year, driving a Ford GT40. At Daytona, though, the duo finished sixth overall.
Another claim to fame for this chassis is that it’s the first T33/2 to be outfitted with the 2.5-liter engine, making its debut in the 1968 Targa Florio. Unfortunately, it crashed out of the event.
Yes, this car’s been places. In addition to Daytona and the Targa Florio, it’s competed at the 1968 Nürburgring 1000km, 1969 Monza 1000km and the Spa 1000km. This is one of just 10 surviving examples of the T33/2, too.
Find this 1968 Alfa Romeo T33/2 “Daytona” for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $1,700,000-$2,000,000.
