What would a clothing chain need with a Ford Thunderbird? Well, the Abercrombie and Fitch of the 1960s was a much different company than the one we know today–back then, Abercrombie and Fitch was still known for its department stores and sporting goods.
So, in the mid-1960s, Abercrombie and Fitch ordered five Ford Thunderbirds to be used as in-store display models to showcase a sort of “rolling office” conversion. Upgrades included a car phone, television, power sunroof and power reclining passenger seat.
Of the five made, this one is one of just three known surviving examples and the only one fitted with a 390 cubic-inch V8. (The rest featured 428 cubic-inch V8s.)
