As we say, first and lasts are often the most collectible, and this P/1000 was the first Ford GT40 Mk 1, making it an essential piece of the storied GT40 history.
This chassis was initially used to fit body panels made by Abbey Panels for the first GT40s before they were delivered to the Ford Advanced Vehicles factory. It wasn’t completed until the winter of 1965-1966, when parts from the wrecked P/1006 were used.
Then Comstock Racing Team took possession of the car for the 1966 season. It competed at the Twelve Hours of Sebring, where it crashed, killing its driver, Canadian ace Bob McLean. The car disappeared for several years until it was rediscovered in the 1980s. FAV engineer Bryan Wingfield decided to rebuild P/1000 using a vintage reserve chassis from FAV.
“During the rebuild/restoration of P/1000 carried out by myself, I confirm that the running gear and steering are original, that the engine and gearbox are dated 1966, and that only the chassis and a few body parts are new,” said Wingfield in a July 1984 statement. Since then, the GT40 has changed hands several times, including a second stint with Wingfield. Since its rebuild, the GT40 has been driven by two F1 racers, Paolo Barilla and Gerhard Berger.
