Opel 1900 (Ascona) 2 door sedan I picked up last summer with hopes of building into a race car. Turns out they are still banned at the local track, and I just bought another project to GRM challenge with so it's just going to sit.

Currently it has the usual battery box rust on the firewall and associated rust through on the floor underneath including the jack point in that corner. Also needs a floor patch in the driver's rear floor and most of the trunk floor too. If you were going toss in a fuel cell the trunk floor would be coming out anyway, so no big deal there. Car hasn't run in a long time, but I did turn it over the other day after priming the oil system and it seems to have good compression, just no spark. Brakes even still had good pressure, so it might not have a lot of work to drive around the yard.

For those of you who don't know, these things are front engine, RWD, and weigh about 2300# with the stock cast-iron 4-cylinder. They handle amazingly well, well enough to be banned at a lot of local dirt tracks. All the body panels are straight, except for a little ding my roommate just put in the nose backing his boat into it. There is enough room to drop in a 4.3 v-6 without any sheet metal mods, and a v-8 with only some clearancing on the firewall or a super-short water pump set-up.

Lots more pictures available, clear SC title in my name, and delivery available on the east coast in two weeks when I trek to NJ to fetch some parts. E-mail or post here with questions. Asking $400, which it's worth to me in parts.

Man, I wish I had the space/ambition.

If I remember correctly, the designer for these cars was an admirer of BWMs and it shows in their clean styling...especially compared to the "mini-Chevy" styling of the cars that Opel produced prior to this car.

Man, that is a cool little critter. I hope someone has the space/time/insanity to build something with it.

I've always liked the old Mantas, but I think I like that thing better.

Would take me about an hour to mount up the tow-bar and have it ready to go, and I can't imagine that towing it would add $50 worth of gas to the trip....

Should be noted though that it now sports Opel Rallye wheels instead of the BMW alloys in the pics, they went away on the '59 Rekord I traded off last week.

Oh and if you want super-cool, with not a lot of sheet metal work the front end from the Manta, with the longer nose and quad headlights can be grafted onto the Ascona too. Makes a sexy hybrid.

Fenders bolt right on, you just need to add a little to the inner fenderwells to mount the nose itself. I may even have an extra nose from a Manta if the buyer isn't in too big a hurry to get it.

You'll need to log in to post.
