Got the second head off. Also had John Reed (my goto guy for engine stuff) pop over and take a look at everything. It all seems fixable and I think I have all the parts. Just need to talk to the people at Jack's Racing Engines to see if they can assemble the heads and touch up the valve job.
And yes those are puddles of oil in the cylinders. I added some after I got most of the water out that dribbled in pulling the heads. Just trying to prevent rust but I think I went a bit overboard.
I may have race car engine heads back tomorrow afternoon and I'm working on getting approval to take Thurs and Friday off to put the engine back together and do some other stuff on the car. Boss #1 is on vacation so he doesn't care, Boss #2 Said OK, Just need to get Boss #3 to approve it but he usually doesn't care as long as Boss #1 and #2 are OK with it.
Well the tomorrow part in the last post didn't work out. Jack's Racing Engine who are building the heads and doing a valve job got the wrong parts sent to them. So instead of Wednesday afternoon I just got the heads back this afternoon (Thursday). Oh wait it was yesterday afternoon because it is now 2 am on Friday. I need to leave for the race today.
So as of 2am the heads and intake are back on and valve lash has been set.
Still lots to do probably going to be another all-nighter to make the race.
That is John Reed in the picture who stayed until 2am getting the engine back together. Thanks John!
Midnight oil burning there. Looks like a fast weekend coming up?
Mt Ascutney this weekend. It did take all night. This year everything seems to be last minute. I should have got the heads back sooner but the wrong parts were sent and the heads were delayed. (Actually it happened twice. If the right parts had come to Jack's either time the heads would have been back with plenty of time. But instead it was another all nighter to get the car ready.
The car is back together now and ready to go on the trailer. Just need to pack and do the usual 50 other things. :-)
This it either the fourth or fifth time this year I've had to work through the night before an event. I can't remember the last time I did it before this year. Many many years ago I'm sure. This year I have a real shot at another championship but I have to make the events!
And on the trailer. I will make it to Ascutney!
Good Luck! Your hillclimber makes me jealous!
Good weekend at Mt Ascutney overall. I ran close to a personal best and the second fastest time. Strange thing is I won the event with the second fastest time. We ran out of time and couldn't complete the third run group on Sunday. By the rules we have to drop all the times for a run group that isn't completed. It makes sense since it isn't fair to count the times for some people when others didn't get the chance to run. However Paul Tingaud and I both got our chance to run in the 3rd run and he ran a 2:40 to my best 2:43. But my 2:43 was my second run and when we dropped the 3rd run that left me as the overall winner. I'm not really happy about it since as I told Paul I feel like he really won, but those are the rules. Here is the dirty car hanging out after a very fast run.
It looks happy there, Like an old thoroughbred put out to pasture.

It does look happy or at least it makes me happy thinking how well it ran on a beautiful fall day.
Our next event is Mt Philo in October. I may have to block off some of that radiator opening. On my fastest run I started at the bottom of the hill with a 170 degree water temp but when I got to the top I only has 145 degrees. So even without running the fan it cooled off during a run. I'm not even sure how it got that low. I think the thermostat is a 160 degree model.
Edit: I still haven't figured this out years later. I think I must have been seeing things. The car normally is really temperature stable. It is usually 180-190 degrees at the top of the mountain.
New front pads and rotors for the Mod.
At Ascutney some piece of steel or iron (it's just a magnetic lump now) got caught under the brake pad and nearly ate through the left front rotor and destroyed the pad. (Lots of smoke when I stopped at the end of the run!)
Since I actually don't know what pads were on the car (they came with the car and have no markings) I had to do new pads and rotors on both sides.
Rotors at 12.19" x 1.25" Plenty of stopping power here.
Looks like the pads and rotors fit.

I have a pair of Wilwood Ultralite 32 Vane rotors, brand new, I can't use. The only issue is they are 1 1/4" x 11 3/4". If you're interested, or know someone who would be, they can be had for CHEAP.
Won't work for me without some changes. Do you have a link to the exact model. I can check with a friend of mine.

Thanks I'll ask at the next event.
Just heard my car made it into Speedway Illustrated magazine "Heats" section - 1/3 page, with a photo. I probably should subscribe.
A friend just found this photo online of me at Cragway turn on Washington. Nice shot.
Mounting tires today. Last race of the season (Mt Philo) is next weekend and I wanted to make sure I have the grooved tires mounted in case I need to take a run in rain. Normally I just avoid running in the rain. If the road is wet I'm usually in my motorhome taking a nap. But I may need to run in the rain to keep my lead in the points.
I little while ago I bought one more new wheel when combined with the old ones I have will let me have two full sets of wheels and tires to bring to an event. The normal slicks and the slicks that have been grooved as backup tires. The grooved tires are also something slightly better than slicks for a rainy day.
The Speedway Motors wide foot bead breaker is new and I wish I had bought it years ago. Even this tire that hadn't been dismounted in years was no problem. It makes dismounting tires so much easier.
Just got back from Mt Philo event.
I didn't have to run in the rain, Yay! And...
It's official. I won the 2014 NEHA championship. The Troyer is King of the Hill for 2014.
All those long nights over the year. All that living in the garage this spring to put the car back together after the crash last year. It all paid off.
Here is a picture of the car resting after the run that clinched the championship.
And here is in-car https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZcLCBx_nakA
Congrats!
Love this thread, makes me want to run a more outrageous car
In reply to SnowMongoose:
