Return the slide hammer.  You can "rent for free" one from the auto parts chain stores.

Local to me, Oreiley's has the better tool loan equipment.  They will even loan you the big socket to take off the hub bolt.  I have not used but they also loan a hub removal set that has a $370 retail price!

Current progress:

I'll warn the two of you reading this, this is going to be a freakishly long process

also, is this considered "light rust"?

another component of "comically long process"... got reminded that the car could use a brake refresh

not necessary, I suppose... but I think the X1 is going to be retired from track duty?

That's totally normal on a Prius.  They don't use the brakes much so they don't clean off the overnight rust, so it accumulates.

They usually get so bad that there are chunks of rust flaking off when the pads still have 6mm of material so in a way you're doing good!

IMO, Toyota should have done four wheel drums, for longevity and reduced drag, but I can hear the whinging from the technopeople already smiley

If you are doing wheel bearings, this is the tool you want.

It bolts to the hub and pushes against the caliper ear.  Leave the axle nut on somewhat until the hub is out, or it can pull the hub apart.

It just eviscerates the hub assembly from the knuckle.  It's awesome.

I mean, I have watched one video where the guy just whacked it out with a hammer from the backside... but it looked like a NE car, and it was on a lift

re: rust, I meant the rust on the axle shaft threads

Pete: that tool prius only?

Sleepyhead: check the logbook. I did one of the wheel bearings I think. It may be the passengers side, in which case I'm sorry you're in there again so soon. Don't go back to oriellys apparently.

In reply to Dusterbd13 :

It's for all unitized hub bearings.  Just rips 'em right out.

I reckon I should probably just order a set of rears and a set of fronts, then I'll have an spare front in case the O'Reilly gets pushed too hard.

That way I have a "known good" on all four corners, I'll get a peek at the rear brakes (and learn how to deal with rear drums).

I just want to share my own Prius rear brake experience.  I once was doing some Prius front brakes and while there I looked at rear shoes, which I had never done before.  With the drums off, I said to myself, "wow, these shoes are really worn down, I'll order shoes."

When those shoes arrived I was flabbergasted! Band new Prius rear shoes have hardly any friction material.  The net result here was I thought I had dangerously low worn shoes and the reality is I had better than 50% material remaining.  I returned the shoes.

So, I went to Rock Auto for you and pulled off a Prius rear shoe picture.  Notice how little is there.  Compare to yours.  My suspicion is that if you have less than 200k miles, you are fine.
