I've driven a slant 6 powered e30 on track that was fun. I'd suggest a caddy 500 for this one.
I know of someone doing a VW 2.5l 5 cylinder swap to a BMW E30 and I think he was using the BMW transmission. So there's a slight chance the VW 2.5 would work in the E46 trans or have an available adapter
There's an eBay seller/dismantler that you can pick up the 2.5l for about $250. I think there out of PA.
Edit: just looked up his info, he used a Mazda RX8 transmission to the VW 2.5l
