We are working on a 1976 Porsche 914 2.0L that needs an exhaust. The J pipes are good, the heat exhangers are fine but the rear exhaust is damaged. The customer requests a stainless piece and the only one that I could find that looks correct is a M&K piece for a 914-6.
Will a 914-6 muffler fit on a 914 2.0L?
John
John,
A few questions:
1) How "period and correct" does the owner want the car? If he wants it concours stock, then the '76 heat exchangers and mufflers were unique to the 76s as they had a catalytic converter.
2) Stainless Steel heat exchangers (HEs) are not stainless steel mufflers. As far as I know there are no SS mufflers. SSI made SS HEs for 1.7/1.8 motors and for 2.0 motors. The only difference between them is that the flanges where the mufflers attach are different between the 1.7/1.8 and the 2.0. The SS HEs will work with your J-tubes and S-tubes to get you heat.
3) The 914-6 parts won't work.
4) Call German Parts & Restoration. Web: http://www.gprparts.com/ They're open, just revamping their website.
5) Or call Pelican Parts Web: www.pelicanparts.com and ask for Glenn. You can also see the different exhaust options on their site. Bursch is a popular option.
6) Check www.914world.com for additional info. Best place for 914 tech questions.
Good luck!
No need for correctness, the guy is looking for the LAST muffler ever. I found a guy (M&K Exhaust www.mkexhaust.com ) that makes the perfect piece except it is for a 914-6, I just don't know if the differences between the 914-6 and the 2.0L are flange shape (three hole vs two hole) and possibly flange spacing (Mine is 26" on center) If it just needs a different set of flanges then I can not see why it can't be done.
If you are or have a shop that can weld the flanges for you, I think you'll be ok. As far as I know, the spacing is the same, but you should confirm this.
Post back details and pix as I am sure that there are others that would like to see it too.

If you are still looking for an M&K muffler to fit a 914-4, I have one. Ben at M&K made one prototype muffler and I boght it. All stainless, very light, 2 in, 1 out. Still needs some finish welding to fit stainless flanges to heat exchangers or muffler but that is easy for experienced welder. All mounting hardware inc. $450 Mark@MarkEpstein.net
