With our Mercedes down for an engine swap, we decided to switch to the Shelby for the upcoming Going to the Sun Rally.

After we installed a right-side wing mirror and nicer—but not original—shift boot arrangement, the car was “nut and bolted” and loaded onto the Exotic Transport truck for the trip out west.

With short notice, the Exotic Transport folks told us it would be a bit tricky to get the car all the way to Montana for the rally, but getting it to California would be easy. This was a blessing in disguise: We needed a few extra days off, and a road trip out west by Shelby Mustang sounded like a lot of fun.

Our trip will start in Gilroy, California and go through the California Gold Country to Crater Lake, Oregon. From there we head to Walla Walla, Washington and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; finally, we'll go to Whitefish, Montana for the start of the rally on September 7.

Did you know that Gilroy is the home of the Garlic Festival, and maybe bills itself as the garlic capital of the world?
