The Challenge would be a GREAT excuse for me to get a cool truck to replace my failing Dakota...

If only I could find a cheap full sized short bed 2wd truck around here that wasn't rusted in half.

So I just re-read the thread, but didn't see an answer yet.. Is there going to be a "truck" standard test of some sort?

I'm starting to have ideas involving a sawzall and some custom body work.

There is no plan for a truck standard test.

You must be able to convince a casual observer that it is a pickup.
Welcoming both vehicles that started life as a pickup as well as vehicles that are now pickups.

No attempts to squash creativity.

The debate of, "what is a pickup truck?" is the story here.
The invitation has been set as, "race a pickup truck" now we wait to see what arrives.

Further more, given budget constraints, will something less fabricated (like a V8 S10 or Rampage) out perform something more fabricated like a circle track frame wearing a truck body skin or The Rice Rod?

Either way, the readers win.

For $2016 this arrived...

This would fit into the $2017 definition of a pickup.
I love it for its attempt at the definition.
Make note that it will not be allowed in $2017 without modifications that address some safety issues like rollover.

Did it perform well? That too is hard to define considering that the Most Spectacular Failure award does get you invited up to the podium. The vehicle was also swarmed by a reporter from Roadkill Online who was at the event.

I always thought Roadkill needs to do a challenge car and show up... (drive from california)

Unfortunately that means it'll take them another 5 years to get to the event...

After firsthand experience with their Lemons Rally attempt, I don't see them making it to the concourse, much less make a pass or autox run. They're nice guys but they've been full of fail lately and really don't seem to take much of anything seriously.

I wasn't gonna do it, but it's decided. I'm bringing a "truck".

I'm not offering much info yet, but it will have a supercharger, and be mid-engine.

Trucks can haul sand bags and tow trailers... that should be included in the criteria of a truck!

We aren't ruling out the Ranger, S10, and other incapable pickups that aren't "real" trucks. Anything fun that resembles a pickup is good to go.

In reply to Andy Neuman:

LOL... I didn't say it had to be a big heavy trailer, just that you can tow one, even if that trailer is a small light U-Haul trailer. And carry say, 10 sandbags. Something objective should define a truck. Also, the bed should be closed off from the passenger compartment. A station wagon with the back roof cut off should not be considered a truck... unless a divider is welded in. And the newly Sawzalled sides should be finished just as a truck bed, and not left rough cut. Some things are subjective, but a fully functional truck bed is what makes a truck a truck.

I know debate is closed but there are always 2018 rules.... That being said TRUCKS HAVE TOW RATINGS. SAE have established tow rating procedures.

http://www.trucktrend.com/how-to/towing/1502-sae-j2807-tow-tests-the-standard/

While I don't have the ability to tow at the Davis Dam I live close to one of the hardest roads to pull on in the S.E., (Black Mountain, NC. Saluta Grade on I26 is just as tough, maybe tougher. I26 from the bottom of the mountain from TN into NC is worse.) Just for shiits & grins and bragging rights, I'm going to do my best to duplicate the SAE test and post the results. As a side comment, towing equipment that serve no other purpose than towing should not count against the budget. Just my late cents.

As for the idea of "tow equipment being budget exempt"...
It is very important to remember that the sub-class has no rules of its own but rather competes under the same rules as any vehicle and therefore still qualifies for the overall award.

LOL... not really, my truck doesn't stand a chance, not because it isn't good but because I couldn't drive a 2017 Corvette to victory. But I'm a truck guy, dad had a truck, and his dad had a truck. My sister drives a truck for a living and my best friend has a trucking company. So the definition of truck has meaning Car weenies entering a hacked up car... hey... where is the emoticon thing that throws up?

A big portion of the event is the Concourse Judging. Present your, "more truck than the others" to the judges. Maybe they will be taken by your efforts. It could possibly give you a heads up in the judging.

Either way, please come and bring your truck. I assure you that it will be fun!
