One of my sons had the Kia equivalent to the 3rd gen Accent. I was looking at it pretty closely to see if I could adapt 2nd gen VW GTI suspension stuff, should I have purchased one for myself. It was close enough that I was thinking I'd gve it a try.

Gosh darn it!!! And I have the next two weeks off for biceps surgery too... what a generous offer!

When I had my 07 a $40 eBay CAI really woke it up. I mean it’s still not fast compared to most performance cars, but with a decent set of snow or A/T tires @ some KYB shocks it was an absolute joy to toss around on snow & gravel. With fresh Michelin X-ice tires I was running 55-60 through 6” of unplowed fresh snow on more than one occasion.

I don't have anything useful to add, but these cars are ingrained with a somewhat poor light in my brain. In 2006/07 I was working detail at the local Hyundai dealer and I used to hang out in the service/parts dept when it was slow and cold out. Customer had a base model Accent in white that he had bought new just after I started. He must have had $2000 into autozone speed parts bolted to the thing. He'd come in once a month or so and ask for an alignment and an oil change "use the good synthetic stuff". Reason for the alignments was "I run this thing pretty hard and I take turns really fast." Full of stories about racing Camaros and Mustangs and "I don't even waste my time with Civics." That was Accent guy. I didn't like Accent guy.

I don't get how you hold that against the poor car though. Sounds like the Accent is a victim here.

Surely was. Old stigma, first impressions and all that. I'd likely drive one now though, and in fact I just advised my SIL to buy an Elantra over a 3 (and I've never met a Mazda I didn't like).

Id be looking at a 3 as well if there weren't so many bad, very personal memories connected to my Protege5 I got rid off.

But I have to admit, I've always had a love of Korean cars having owned a Tiburon that I got far too little seat time in.

There are three types of Korean car enthusiasts I've encountered. You've got the people that want a decent car for little money. They're getting 90% of the car for 60% of the money kind of thing. Then you've got the kids with their first new-ish car that outruns everything and it's had the entire pep boys catalog thrown at it. Then there's the weird ones like me that appreciate a very low buy in, cheap parts and easy to work on. Then we thrash the hell out of it and make people got "WTF just happened?"

My wife has a 2012 3rd gen (owned since new). It's easy to work on, parts are cheap, MPG is great, and has been Honda-reliable for the past 120k (one battery, one set of brakes, regular oil changes and a few sets of tires). Build quality is damn good for Hyundai's cheapest offering, but the NVH leaves a little to be desired if we're being nitpicky.  With a manual, some ground controls and a set of 15s wrapped in sticky meats it would probably be a hoot to commute in.

2012 would be 4th gen with the 1.6L Nu gdi. Completely different beast than the nuggets we are talking about. Great little runabout though.

Hyundai hasn't offered a sohc since 2002 and that was the 1.5L Alpha. Everything has been dohc and 4 valves per cylinder since. And that's 140hp na

Not gonnna lie, all these facts bobzilla's spitting out are tempting me. How much do they weigh? How much boost can those little 1.6'es (or the 1.5) take?

So the wife's 2000 sedan with the manual tipped the truck scales by us at 2480lbs without me. Full tank of fuel (all 11 gallons lol) and a full size spare.

there's some older stuff out there but I remember some guys in the Puerto Rico (or somewhere warm) were stuffing 30psi into them. At that point the weak link ends up being the trans. I'll have to look up some old vids of first gen cars running 9's.
I lied it’s only an 11 second car

I don’t remember if I ever weighed my 07 GS hatch, but I’m pretty sure it was a bit lighter than that. I’m thinking closer to 2250-2300 for some reason?

They were supposed to be in the 2300lb range. I've never trusted that scale but it's all I had back then. Don't forget ours had 2 extra diors and longer wheelbase

26psi on stock internals? Tuning? Injectors? What is this voodoo and where can I learn more?

Keep in mind the Alpha and Beta (1.8/2.0 DOHC) are both closed deck, cast iron blocks. You'll literally blow the heads off these things before you damage the block.
