The S2 is a rare and fast bird, and as a 944 owner I'd want it, especially for racing.
Truth be told I spend the entire autocross staring longingly at my main competitor's 71 914 (usually with the hoods up and something broken). They can be such pretty cars.
If I buy a Porsche to cruise, it'd be a 914.
That is a tough decision. Either one seems like a steal for under $5k. The 914 is more likely to cause less pain when you go to re-sell it down the road, but the 944 seems like it would be more fun to drive. I usually ignore resale values so I would be pretty tempted to go 944. But then the 914 is so sweet...
Damn. That is a tough choice.
The 914 will be cheaper to fix and more fun on sunny days since it is a targa. With the 1.8 it will be dog slow and you will hate that fuel injection system. It hates vacuum leaks. The car will appreciate more too.
The 944 will be faster and more comfortable on long high speed drives. Tough choice but what do you need?
Does the 944 come with anything like service records? If it isn't overdue for one of everything, I'd have it in a heartbeat.
Let me know which one you don't buy. Either seems like a really, really good deal.

Seems like a ground swell of support for the 914. It is a sweet car and it would be my third 914. Pretty familiar with the pluses and minuses of the cars. However, here is a wild card: The s2 has an asking price $1500 under the 914. That pays for a lot of goodies. I haven't had a 944 before, technically. My last car was an 88 924S which I used for about a million miles as a DD. Fun and reliable.
Buy the 914, resell it for what it's worth, use the profit to buy the 944, spend the original $5k on Mexican food.
one from column A, one from column B

Honestly I would be tempted by the 944 then.
But that's probably mostly so you'll share where the 914 is and we can scramble over who gets to score that toy. ;-)
The 944 is simply a better car in every way.
Another vote for both. Track the 944 and use the 914 for cruising and PCA tours. Borrow another 5k if you have to. Dave Ramsey be damned.

Nice as both would be, I can't get two past the accountant (aka wife). Remember, the Lotus $Challenge car is already in the garage. She always talks some nonsense about too many toys...

1) buy both
2) flip A
3) ???
4) profit
Hmm. I've driven both a 914 1.8 (admittedly not in as good condition as this one) and an S2. The 914 struck me as a neat car and they handle well, but from a bang-for-buck point of view I'd take the S2 if there isn't too much deferred maintenance.
914s are cool little thiings but my money is on the s2. I lust for one almost as much as I do for a 911sc
air cooled rear engine vs front engine prosche no contest. the rear wins everytime. to find a unmolested 914 that has not had new pans put in or rockers is a find. the 914 will always go up in value. they have been flirting with the 10k mark for a while now and have seen them sell for 12k.

UPDATE: And the winner is... I bought the 944s2. I just wanted something that I could use without feeling guilty. Plus the S2 goes like a scalded dog and has A/C - two traits lacking in the 914.
After reading the piece in the June issue about the new BFG G-force Sport Comp-2 tires, I just fitted the 944S2 out with a set. 225 section front, 245 section rear. I will keep everyone posted on how the tread wear is.
Nice buy, now pass us the info on the 914!
I'm pretty sure we just had this exact same discussion not to long ago?
I vote A.

A! The difference between a 1.8 and a 2.0 is 0.2
And all the fuel injection differences that made the 1.7 and the 2.0 better than the 1.8
The 1.8 is disappointing. 3.0 twin cam otoh is Awesome! Based solely on the engine and transmission, I would MUCH rather have the 944.
I vote B!

Agreed with your response sir....
Yeah, living in Fl. myself? I would have gone for the 944 too. Besides, does the 944 have any problem area that compares to the (potentially) cracked frame rail that can afflict 914s?
