I have a friend that is looking for 175/70-13 tires for vintage racing. He's not concerned with winning, he just wants an affordable tire he can use for this purpose. Anybody know of a source?

I've only done some vintage racing with a group in Canada (VARAC), so I can't say for sure. But my understanding is most vintage racing groups will specify which tires you can run, especially in "historic" classes. He may have to use something like the Hoosier TD, which are treaded bias-ply slicks.

If he's allowed to run non-DOT tires, he can look into circle track slicks from Hoosier or American Racer. I started a thread about this a couple of days ago. In the sizes I would run, they're much cheaper than DOT-R options.

Check eBay for used tires.

Seriously, I'm not kidding. I've found a couple stores there with some remarkable 13" lightly-used selections.

So I know you said 175's but the next nearest size that Tire Rack has as a performance tire are a 205/60-13. There's actually a few.

My dad ran 205s on the stock 13x5.5 Corvair wheels when he raced and autocrossed.

After doing a little research, it looks like Avon is the only one with a 175/70-13 performance tire, if you want to call this a performance tire.

First up he has two good choices for vintage tires; Hoosier Street TDs in 185/60-13 they are a very short tire 20.6 tall with 7" section width. They'll likely fit under the fenders of an 850. The other tire is Avon ACB 9, these are taller than the Hoosiers but have a 6" section width.

The Avons do not have the ultimate grip of the Hooiser (it's close) they also have a taller sidewall and are huge fun. They have a good bit of windup so you can hang the car out and look like a total hero. I tried a used set a couple of years back and the fun factor was big. I think the size is 6.0 x 22 x 13

Both of the aforementioned tires are bia ply so he'll need to set the car up accordingly.

When I get used tires I get them from John Berget, usually $50-60 per tire.

For the past few years I've been buying new tires, the Hoosier TDs are $180 a piece.

. That explains it. I had an 8:50 in college and had a ball with that little car when it was running
