Today my Elantra has a bell chime behind the dash, I have never heard this before, two loud chimes periodically. Not seat belt alarm, louder and bell like. No warning light on dash.

Have you fed it recently? Those little hamsters get weird. Does it do this while driving? Sitting? Next time it does it wiggle the key in the ignition..... other than that I got nuttin'.
That's the warning that one of the warning lights is burnt out.
Sorry, totally unhelpful; any notion of anything unusual in the car or its surroundings? I get the impression you've seen plenty of cold recently so this isn't the best example, but I was a little puzzled to discover the Leaf warns you when outside temps drop to 38F or below...
Have you made someone mad lately or do you have some practical joker friends? Annoyatron

Yes, so much yes to this.
Seriously, I suspect the ice jammed into the undercarriage is messing with a sensor like the Oxygen sensor, or maybe the ice is stopping the truck sensor from making contact.
Car runs fine and gauges show all is OK, does it when in traffic, not on the highway at all.
I am stunned, have I stumped the hive?
I washed the car today, let's see if the underbody ice was the issue.
In reply to bgkast: You might be on to something, bring on that 335i and fit the nut behind that wheel
At the risk of sounding like an idiot, the harmonic balancer or a loose pulley might make a bell like noise, according the teh interwebz. Are you sure it's coming from the dash and not the engine compartment?
You know, the more I think about it I think it's a sign of the engine coming apart and the transmission crapping out. I'll give you $1500 for it as it sits and come get it tomorrow. Or, if you really want, I can trade you even for the wife's 08 Rio with just a tick over 80k miles. Although, I may have to ask for some cash on your end because I just changed the t-belt/accessory belts and have a new water pump for it as well.
Has not made the sound since I washed it, I still think it was a sensor wrapped in ice.
Bob, keep trying, I will keep this one until it falls apart, no sign of that yet.
Nothing in the manual about it? An audible warning with no accompanying visual indicator to tell you what it is wouldn't be any use if it isn't described in the manual...

hey, you can't blame me for trying! I should hook you up with my camber plates that fit your car.
155K and I am considering swapping out the rear shocks, the first replacement parts beyond 2 filters and a set plugs.
It still has OEM brake pads
