It was sitting in the parking garage when I left work last night.

It is badged as a Tesla but looks like a Lotus. There are other Teslas in the building but none of them look like this.

Would that be one of those that Tesla made into the Roadster back in the day?  I thought that's how they got their start.

Here's one: https://www.sanfranciscosportscars.com/used-vehicle-2011-tesla-roadster-2.5-c-337/

Yes, that's an original Tesla roadster, the same kind as the one that Musk launched into space on the first Falcon Heavy.

Thanks for the link. After I posted I thought about that, felt too lazy to hunt it up.

Is this something you can actually buy from Tesla, or is it a limited production thing? I see electric cars all over the place, but this is the first time I have seen one of these.

I think they are out of production, they were years ago.  2008-2012. Clarkson tested one on Top Gear when he was still on there.

You are seeing more of them appear again as there is a improved battery pack that Tesla released recently. The original's range was ok at best and combined with age were not as usable but the replacement bumped that up to 330ish miles.

Yeah, and Lotus hasn't made the chassis that they used for years either.  They never made very many, a couple thousand at most.  There's supposed to be a new Roadster coming, but it's an in-house Tesla car.

No personal experience driving one, but I've heard they drive very differently from the Lotus.  Much faster in a straight line, but they weigh around 3000 pounds so it's a LOT heavier than an Elise.
