For me, a lot of it will depend on the price point.  I like what I see so far.  The Prelude was never a full out sports car, rather a sports coupe, so I don't expect eye bulging performance numbers.  A fun driving experience, every day livable and at the right price would be enough for me.

The Prelude has always been a 2 door Accord with sporty bodywork.

Looks good. It's just..... the CR-Z was a huge disappointment. Get it right this time, Honda!

At least you could get a proper 6 speed manual in the CR-Z

The article refers to the original as being fun to drive.  As I remember it, the original wasn't so much fun to drive and in certain circles they were called Honda Quaaludes.

I'm not up on Honda corporatespeak, so can someone confirm that the following passage is not describing a cvt with "fake" shift points?

“further advances Linear Shift Control to deliver maximum levels of driver engagement, in keeping with the heritage of the Prelude line.”

I'd bet money that's a CVT with fake shift points.

From Honda:

"The newly developed Honda S+ Shift is a new function designed to pursue the “joy of driving” that further accentuates the sense of oneness between the driver and the vehicle, while fully leveraging the characteristics of the e:HEV system. The further advancement was made to the Linear Shift Control synchronizing vehicle speed with engine sound, which has been installed in e:HEV models starting with the Fit e:HEV that launched in 2020. Without compromising high environmental performance unique to HEV models, the Honda S+ Shift precisely controls the engine RPM during acceleration and deceleration to realize direct drive response and sharp gear shifting. Moreover, the powerful engine sound synchronizes with the Active Sound Control (ASC) system, enhancing engine sound quality by offering the engine sound in sync with engine RPM through the speaker system and the highly responsive meter display. In this way the Honda S+ Shift will stimulate all of the driver’s senses and provide exhilarating driving at the will of the driver, further “synchronizing” the driver and the vehicle.

<Key features of Honda S+ Shift>

・By linking two high-power motors with the ASC system, the Honda S+ Shift achieves dynamic engine RPM changes and a sharp upshift feeling, providing feedback that resonates with all of the driver’s senses, amplifying the sense of oneness between the driver and the vehicle.

・The Honda S+ Shift further advances the Linear Shift Control applied to current e:HEV models, enabling gear shifts (upshift and downshift) according to the driving conditions and environments at all speed ranges. While turning, the Honda S+ Shift system quickly responds to driver steering input and activates shift hold, enabling the vehicle to trace the desired driving line at the will of the driver.

・By maintaining the optimal engine RPM for the particular driving conditions, the power generated by the engine during re-acceleration will be fully utilized as driving force. This greatly improves the initial response time of the motor when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal and enables overwhelmingly high response that is directly connected to driver input.

・Although e:HEV does not have a mechanical transmission mechanism, when the Honda S+ Shift is activated, the driver can shift gears with a paddle shifter, so that the driver can enjoy driving feel as if the vehicle features a transmission system. With quick gearshift responses achieved through the coordination of the engine and high-power motor, Honda S+ Shift function will strive to offer the joy of driving based on direct response to driver input. "

so, a bit of column A, a bit of column B. CVT with paddles for when you're feeling froggy, fake engine noise piped in while the ICE isn't icing, and my suspicion is that it will flare the torque output from the hybrid system during "shifts" to give you a brief sense of additional thrust when you grab the next "gear". Shift hold sounds cool, and smart.

with CTR and Integra both being 4 door, it wouldn't specifically need all this hybrid nonsense to be a hot seller. A 2 door CTR/ITS would be popular all by itself. My guess is maybe a 1.5T + Hybrid. I'm not sure if Honda have a power train in that configuration, but it *should* be more exciting/special than a standard 2.0 LFB hybrid combo. Plus, it would then leave the door open for Prelude SH (super hybrid!) down the line. If it makes it that far.

That's all anyone can really ask for, isn't it?

I agree that the price point will greatly impact the appeal for most.

The fake engine noise stuff cracks me up. I had the dealer turn off it through the ECU during the first oil change in my '23 BRZ.

Hybrid.  Meh.  Econobox in a fancy wrapper with a big marketing budget.  Don't care.

Just because the powertrain isn't fun to operate doesn't mean it will be slow. Hybrids have instant-on torque and CVTs can give constant acceleration at peak power.

Hybrid is now my favorite power adder for a daily. No lag, smooth fat torque curve like an American V8.

I get really stimulated when I put my work provided Escape Hybrid into sport mode and feel it run through the "gears" /s

Just embrace the CVT if you have one, I want to put my foot in it, have it hold max performance rpm and just seamlessly accelerate without any of that fake bullE36 M3. It's one of the things I appreciated about my former gen 3 prius and the escape when it is not in "sport" mode.

Fortunaletly the other 3 vehicles in the fleet are all sticks.

Close off the grilles a bit and, yeah, now I see it. (And can’t seem to unsee it.)

I just want a reasonably priced car.

CTR suspension bits and paddles for regen (loading the front suspension and engine braking) matters far more than CVT tuning. If linear delivery of power in the most effective and efficient manner bothers you, I have some carbs that you can rejet.

Preludes have always had a similar greenhouse to other aspirational models of the time. The fifth gen looked like the Skyline, the fourth gen looked a bit like that Supra... this one looks a bit like a 911.
