On my E30 (a 325iS) the remote thermostat was a secondary thermostat and only to take the heater core out of the loop. It looked like this:
Pretty small connections. The larger two were maybe an inch. The smaller one around 3/8". Is that what you are seeing?

Yup. Apparently not what I was thinking it was.
Back to the drawing board.
So do I understand the concept of a remote thermostat right? It's a housing that allows the thermostat to be installed in the hose between the water pump and the radiator? Just a fabrication/setup thing, not a functional change?
