Coach me.I recently purchased a Volvo 240 with 294k miles. It has beautifully handled a 14 hour drive down to Florida and I've been beating the hell outta it with my friends here on vacation. The trim is fallen off, the paint is peeling, the power steering works when it wants to, but dammit I've put a lot of work and learning on this thing to get it running like this.
But heres the thing, my mom has a Prius she wants to give away to a family member. Its a newish one with 91k miles or so. I've been kicking the tires on it cleaning it up out of bordom and I've spent enough time with it and now I want it.
It has told me that my 240 is on borrowed time, that it will stick with me through getting my graduate degree next year with no fuss, its showed me its air conditioning. Most importantly it said that even through its a Pearl pinkish white that the hippy girls will still love it like they love my Volvo...

A friend of mine has put 70,000 miles on one and spent $1,400 on repairs. That's pretty amazing.
That is good!! Or previous owner of my 240 but $2k in repairs for 10 years 100,000 miles of service. Not bad either!
$.02 per mile in both cases! Nice.
I'm a die-hard stick shift-driving, BMW-wrenching, track day-going enthusiast and you would have to catch me on a really bad day to not recommend a Prius as a daily driver, especially for FREE. The one problem I have? It's not a CT200h.
I tried to daily drive "interesting" cars for over a decade. Ultimately I've been much happier dailying an appliance and having a true project car. Take the Prius, sell the 240, buy a kart or a passion car and have real fun.
Or buy a dual sport bike with Volvo money??
Its a 2007 with 130k miles.

Check the oil! If its full,
check it every 5k and change it every 10k.

My girlfriend gonna legit kill me. Her parents own two priuses and she hates them. Oh well

After you get past $45 for the fluid.
Its EZ. A Funnel and 3' of 1/2 PEX Pipe. Is so cheep you wont feel bad to trash them when your finished. So $50 and your time.
Be responsible and recycle all your fluids.
Gotcha easy peasy. Looks like I got a weekend of wrenching on it then. Will do plugs, oils, trans, and look at break pads. I've never done drums before, so I will now learn how to.
My 03 has 130k with original rear shoes. Put front pads and rotors on at 120.
I pretty much hate recent Toyota products, I feel that the quality is no longer even close to what thier reputation is built on, but from what I hear about the Prius, it sounds like they must be built by the old, really good, Toyota.
I just wish that they'd build a Prius-ized scion xB I'll have wait for one of the recent wagon style Prius to deprecate into my price range.
Take the Prius and sell the Volvo. Use the Volvo money to build a Challenge car.
240 is race ready. I replaced every damn suspension part and bushing.
I think it would be wise to spend some time on the Volvo exterior as I spent $1,400 on the suspension and drive train rehaul. But the car is real beat up on the outside. Prob get a better price if I did.
Here's the thing though. I only drive considerably under 10,000 miles/year. I have a remote job no job commute. I enjoy living in the city so usually walk to places. I'm going to take online grad school. however my plans for 2017 is to pretty much follow the good weather on the East Coast and enjoy my mobility that I have. so even though I don't need a really reliable car like the Prius it would be damn useful on road trips vs the Volvo.
Could I tow a small motorcycle with it?
Seems like we're nearing critical mass for spec-Prius class somewhere.
Mines also that green color I made fun of last week.. Karma. I just bought a one-way ticket back down to Florida. Going to drive the Volvo up next weekend to North Carolina as I will have a much easier time selling it up there with broken AC. Worth the $70 flight ticket.
Most 240 buyers who are in the know know that the 240s never really had good air conditioning to begin with.
Ideally whoever buys the 240 know. Volvo pretty well. Because that trailing arm bushing was an incredible pain in the butt to replace!!!
What's a good place to buy Prius junk? I'll need front rotors, break pads, oil filter, oil, transmission fluid...
There is absolutely no way that the Prius is half the chick magnet that the Volvo is.
That's why I've decided to park the Volvo here in Florida and use it to beach bum around in while I'm here for winters.
