so, this is a thought I've had because of GLTC running Corvette. But, how hard would it be to "unplug" the front two cylinders off an LS, and just run it on 6 (I suppose optimally removing the piston and con-rod)?

I didn't see the LV3 mentioned.
All aluminum, steel crank, long rods, high compression. Looks like it has potential

You don't say FWD or RWD but I am asuming RWD is what you want.
The 3.7 out of the Mustang can be aquoze for more powe
The GM LFX is not a bad engine and might be an easier swap due to the single exhaust port.

This, bone stock.

That would be a 2015-up 4.3 V6 truck engine. Main problem might be electronics options; it's based on the Gen 5 and direct injected.
Edit: I see the link that Daewoo of Death posted above me is to the exact same thing.

Pentastar 3.6?
I cant recall the exact ways of making it happen, but I remember looking at the manual transmission from a crossfire and a Wrangler with the 3.6 to get a more car shaped transmission.
I like our 3.6 pentastar.

There's a surprising number of Maseratti 4.2 V8s from Quattroportes floating around for around $3000-4000, rated for about 395 hp. Some even have a factory dry sump. Not quite as powerful as some options on the list, but a ton of wow factor.
These jumped to mind for me too, think of those sounds echoing through the forest!

I wonder how the crazy flappy paddle transmission in those holds up to abuse? As far as I know the failures on those are usually from gentle driving...
Holy crap, a whole drivetrain is $4500 on ebay!

If this thought exercise is looking for alternative power plants for your BRZ rally car ,then I'd suggest finding the weight of the stock engine and accessories to aid in picking its future replacement. For reference , my LM4 weighs just under 400 lb, with headers, alternator, powering steering pump, a flex plate (not a flywheel) and no starter.
In reply to DeadSkunk (Warren) :
If the BRZ gets a different engine, it'll be a different thought exercise. This is noodling around on something a little more open ended and ambitious, I'm more concerned with learning about engines I hadn't considered yet so I can think about how they would interface with everything else.

Someone needs to swap that setup into a 944!

The supercharged Northstar is 4.4 liter destroked version of the 4.6 n/a.
Revisiting the destroked LS topic. Stock stroke is 3.268" (bore is 3.780"), so if you could get the stroke down to ~3.05" then that'd be about 4.5L.
Can always get a custom billet crank made to that spec for whatever rods you want, but $$$: http://www.callies.com/catalog/product/ultra-billet-ls/?
Also, supposedly some folks have successfully offset-ground the crank for MORE stroke, by .212": https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c5-tech/417849-offset-grinding-cranks-interesting-topic-on-ls1-tech.html
Which, if you applied the opposite direction (3.056" stroke).... by my maths, would put you at 4.4959L!
Now, what transmission behind it is a different story, probably would need to use truck drivetrain stuff.
