When adding a flare, which do you prefer.
The add on?
or the fender replacement?
These are examples of ad-on and replacement fenders, not the point of the question.
EDIT: Poser car changed for one that looked more similar to the other and to make people who see conversations about it go "What are they talking about???"
For off-road, the add on is better, especially if it is easily replaced.
The fender replacement will almost always look better.
For the track, add-on. Easy replacement after someone gets stupid.
Otherwise, it's fashion. Some people like the "cobbled together racecar" look. Some people like the "factory homologation special" look.
I like the looks of the red car.. but for all practical uses.. the green one is better as you can more easily replace them... but for god's sake, protect the oilcooler.. seeing them out in the open like that makes me cringe

The green car is a poseur street car, the red car is a legit competition car. Seriously, that green car. Useless mirrors, stickers on the windows where they block visibility, a single fog light aimed 12" in front of the car - it's a cartoon.
Red car is sexy, but I dont mind bolt one ones, but the huge ass ones on the green care are ugly. I prefer the smaller ones....
Ok, you all know those cars above are simply just embodiment of the question not the question in it's entirety?
Here's another example:
Porsche 924 with SCCA D-Prod bodywork:
Porsche 924 Carerra GTS (factory bolt on rear flare)
Porsche 944 (Euro market)
They are essentially the same chassis underneath.
Add-on all the way. Plus they only cost like $11.28. Less when they go on clearance in September

I know it is a poseur car.. but at least it's flares unbolt if something should happen to them
I bet that green car is a bad as race car dressed up like a poser car to surprise people..
And that truck with the swimming pool flares is the ultimate offroad machine disguised as a pos.
I went with add-on but only because $240 got it done.
*also... note the signage on the images. These guys show up at AER race weekends, take amazing photos and then give them away to the racers as part of their sponsorship or ... something. Whatever it is - they are berkeleying awesome.

Second image is not loading, but it sounds like box flares, which are both functional AND good looking, whereas the other kind of flare are so cheesy that they don't even have a name.
We used to have a box flares thread, but it got ruined by people posting without knowing what "box flare" means.
What about flairs that don't close up to the body in the rear? Cool or?

Don't sink the thread by placing a titanic sized iceberg of a thread jack in the middle....
Open in back is to release the high pressure zone in the fender. I like it.
I'll vote add-on normally, but I've seen some really nice integrated flares over the years. It depends on what car and the look you're trying to achieve. I could use some Challenge friendly add-ons.

I don't care for exposed hardware on flares. Other than that I have no problem with either option
In reply to stanger_missle:
Not plastic dipping the pool before riveting it on is just plain lazy.

The cheapest set of 4 I could find last year was $127 I believe on eBay.

And sometimes they are both.
People love the look of the Alfa GTAm, but when replicas are made- it's common to see the flare gently put into the fender, nice and smooth. But the real GTAms were clearly just riveted on. You can count and measure them.

should probably also have some sort of vent in the trailing edge of the front fender too
First car looks like crap. 2nd one is awesome. Removing the green poser car was a dirty trick I was confused as hell and thought I went colorblind.
